Posted by Kay Fordham I do not know where my Robert Stoddart resided in Ireland. Family tradition says Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, but I find little evidence of Stoddarts there. I also do not know from whence James Stoddart came, but I feel there is a connection between the two since they settled in the same township in Allegheny County. Not knowing the parentage or siblings of these men is a hinderance as well. I am aware that many Scotch-Irish (or Scots-Irish) Stoddarts went from Ireland to Nova Scotia. As I recall the majority of these immigrated much later than my Robert who was here by at least 1789. There may be some connections, but at present I know of none. I am currently studying all of the other Scotch-Irish that Robert Stoddart had dealings with, both in Cumberland County and Allegheny County, PA. The S-I were very "clannish," and tended to reside near and associate with their cronies from the old country. I am making note of the Irish counties where I find these surnames - many in County Down. Here is a link to a Belfast Newspaper that is indexed (1737-1800. It includes items from all over Northern Ireland. I had the most hits when I used the spelling Stothard. Also try Stoddart, Stodart, Studdert, and any other variation you can think of. http://www.ucs.louisiana.edu/bnl/ I suspect the Stoddarts went from Scotland to Ireland during the "plantation of Ulster" in the 1600s. The name is prolific in the lowland area of Scotland close to Ireland. Good luck with your research. I will put your message in my research file. If you have any other questions, let me know. Judy,
: My Canadian Stoddarts also came from Ireland -
: either Cavan County or Leitrim County. They
: arrived in Simcoe County, Ontario in 1818.
: Father, John, Mother Jane Davis and 3 sons,
: William, James and Hugh. I would guess that
: the father was born about 1770. In all
: census records they clearly classify
: themselves as "Irish". Do you
: have any idea what part of Ireland your
: Stoddarts came from?

: Looking for origins of James STODDART who
: married Nancy Reilly and resided in
: Allegheny County, Pennsylvania in the late
: 1700s and early 1800s. Both were born in
: Ireland.
:
: Is he related to Robert STODDARTwho also
: came from Ireland and settled in Moon
: Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania?
:
: Regards,
