: Hi Yvonne,
: Years ago I worked as a vocational
: placement specialist with special
: needs people. I also worked with some
: great audiologists who helped my
: clients with communications needs. I
: would suggest contacting someone like
: this at a local rehabilitation faclity
: to give you current information as to
: types of treatments/equipment that
: might be helpful to your child. There
: is a great agency in Minneapolis,
: Minnesota called PACER center. They
: can assist you with questions like
: this and any other issues that come up
: with people who experience special
: needs. You can reach them at area
: code 952-838-9000. I hope this helps.
: Good luck let me know how things are
: going.

My son Jordan, as well as a duplication 22.11 has Autism and is having trouble speaking. We have found basic sign language as a good way to ask for things and express emotions. It seems that by speaking outside of himself he doesn't have to refer to himself and that keeps him in the comfort zone of the ASD. Even if you don't go with sign language it can still be helpful to set up some basic signs in your family it can make day to day life so much easier.
