Like many who post to this site, we struggled to find information about Trisomy 22 when our daughter was born with it. Mostly, we wanted to know if there was hope for her to survive, then to thrive, and ideally enjoy life. Although we have had our share of trials, our hearts go out to those who have endured much greater health challenges than we. Our girl will be 6 in a few weeks. She is still only 32 pounds, and has been for the last 2-3 years. She had three surgeries in the last year. However, she is developmentally equivalent to 'normal' now, and she even reads at a third grade level. She can write and spell her own 20- 30 word stories. She is more than 2 inches shorter on one side than the other, but she walks and runs around. Many hours of prayers by people around the world have helped. We understand that some health care professionals question the abilities of our trisomy 22 children, and even adjust their care based on what they believe to be 'worth it'. This is usually due to the lack of information. For those of you in such a situation, please take this case as evidence that there is no cause to limit care. Her life, like those of all the trisomy 22 kids we are familiar with, is an amazing thing to behold and a priviledge to be part of. With love and prayers to all the Trisomy 22 families, The Schwinds
