What if there was an earthquake? Could the tailings dam leak?
The dam would be engineered to withstand strong ground motion resulting from large earthquakes. This is the type of dam used at Fort Know, which withstood the Denali Fault earthquake of 2002.
OK-it may withstand the earthquake! Let us see what kind of weather we have in Alaska! It snows for 9 months-that my love, the snow has to melt! It rains a lot in Alaska-that my love, it has to go down. It is windy in Alaska-oh baby, it shows no mercy at all. Along with the wind-here comes the waves, and that can only be blamed by Mother Nature working it's best. Sure blame it on Mother Nature-since the man was not at fault!
The tailings facility and dam would be lined to minimize any seepage. A seepage collection system would be in place to collect and surface water below the facility would be monitored on an ongoing basis.
OK-the dam has to overflow. How will it overflow? Melting of snow! Rain pouring down and it will make it overflow! When the wind is blowing- it will create waves and baby love, there are different type of waves(are you thinking of little waves, now?) My little ponds here in my village, when the wind was blowing madly, my little pond had an attitude of its own. Little pond with big waves, just eating away the land around it.
