ICC is an effort of 76 countries to clean up their beaches. This is scheduled for September 20, 2008. The Ocean Conservancy will be featuring the ICC event in Alaska this year. On September 21st Alaskans and Peruvians will join in a grand rock-and-roll satellite celebration of the ocean (big internet concert) - featuring the Alaska Native bands, Pamyua and rap group the Wolf Pack. Quechua bands will be featured in Peru. This event will include simultaneous drumming and singing from both continents and a declaration will be presented signed by citizens promising to personally help reverse the deterioration of the ocean.
We are working on the following declaration and we need your feedback. Here is the declaration:
Alaska’s marine birds, walrus, seal, polar bears, whales and other marine life are in trouble, permafrost is melting, thousands of tons of plastic garbage is piled on Alaska's beaches, villages are in danger of falling into the sea, toxic chemicals are in Alaskans' blood and breast milk, and fish stocks are crashing. This year Alaskans are taking back power over their lives and those of their children and grandchildren. Alaskans are commiting to reverse the increasing degradation of water, land, and human life by:
Educating ourselves about everyday products that poison fish, water, land, and all life and committing to cleaner alternatives.
Using and re-using cloth bags (like cotton or canvas bags), and glass or metal bottles - instead of plastic.
Raising awareness in our communities of individual actions that contribute to the health or sickness of the ocean and ourselves.
Cleaning up our beaches and our communities regularly.
Honoring through music, art, and ritual, the land and ocean that gives us life.
Reaching out to our neighbors in Peru, Russia, China, Korea and Japan to join us in this effort to save the Pacific Ocean, on which all our lives depend.
We, the undersigned, hold a vision of a clean ocean, healthy grandchildren, a sustainable economy, inexpensive alternative energy, and healthy communities featuring gardens and greenhouses. We commit to working towards the achievement of these goals, including changing our own habits that may inhibit them.
Please let us know what you think and if your community would like to be involved.
