talk about some hard times and it never ending
No economy, couldn't farm, too much drought and heat, even if you could farm, whatever you grew cost more to grow then what "the market" would pay, they herded cattle into pits and massacred them to try and drive prices back up (and they couldn't feed them anyway)(an old lday who witnessed that was still crying remembering it), no money, bankers had it locked up, just shut it down, and foreclosed and took property like crazy.
Both sides of my family went through that, all the family land except for one great uncle poofed away into richer hands upstream someplace.
Anyway, the survivalist lesson there was obvious--don't borrow! Don't buy into their conjob fiat currency loaned into existence with interest scam. It is designed to boom and bust the economy and strip wealth from people, during the bust cycle, along with insisting that somehow government (again, the people) needs to go into debt to function. This is BS, even using fiat currency it doesn't have to have interest associated with it, or "usury". Way way back the dudes with beards bigger than mine warned against this conjob.
This was illustrated by the timeline in the documentary, the big war 1, huge markets demand, money loaned into existence, pushing-shilling_ "stock" with all this loaned cash, "the roaring 20s" then blowing the economy out, and stripping all the productive labor that has transpired away from those who did this labor. They took it with their casino stocks and the bank scavenging of loans.
And that freaking dustbowl action wiped out the middle of the country and ag, because they pushed their "new" approved ag policies then, strip the turf, plow it all up, mono culture, plant 10 zillion acres of just wheat (sounds like corn today, doesn't it...)! whoops! big winds, all the topsoil goes 10,000 feet high and blows away..whoops, you still owe money for that land and equipment they encouraged you to borrow for.
Times might get tough, but if it is tough AND you are in debt to those skunks (apology to real skunks)..bad things happen.
In my opinion, it is better to be poor than be in debt. You can deal with poor and perhaps work your way back up, but poor AND in debt, sorry, you're screwed. They gotcha then.
