Wildfires..you got all the time in the world to clear burnable stuff from around your domicile and shelter.
Well, I mean if you are in a tiny clearing with 100 foot trees all around, sure, you might get the air sucked out of your shelter or get cooked, but short of that...if the fire is some distance away..better than being out in it. You can always button the thing up at the last second when the fire gets close, then wait, then go out later when all the stuff is burnt. Wildfires go fast, they don't linger once the local fuel load is consumed.
Then there's always the old traditional unthinkable, the NBC attack. A shelter with enouugh berming to protect you from rads, as in several feet of dirt, a good quality air filter, stored supplies..that's it, the only thing that *could* possibly work.
Humans and animals have used underground living or hiding, in caves or man made structures, or animal dug, etc, for millions of years, it has way more going for it then the stuff against it, else we and the animals never would have adopted it.
True story this is a hoot. Long time ago it was summer and I would always take a month and a half off and go camping. this was back when it was easy to get work, and my bosses all knew I was going to do this so they were cool with it. Anyway, I made this nice campsite. Had a dog, he got a bug and decided to excavate this *amazing* dugout under a stump, a big one. He dug like a badger on crack for a week, what a nice cave!
So, anyway, one night we had a terrible storm, it was the weekend and one of my buds and both our girlfriends are all out. The tent is slap not gonna make it, way too much wind and torrential rain. I get this idea, "hey, let's go down in Blue's cave"! Dog was named Blue.....ya, from the song..
All four of us plus Blue fit down there! We could just sit up too. Rode the storm out dry.
