In the late 60's, we had to travel to Hartford 3 or 4 times. Middle of summer, temps in the 90's, during the race riots, straight thru the north end. Had no choice cause it was the only way to get to the adoption agency we were working with. And you just know we hit every single dang red light there was!!! Total black neighborhoods, and they'd stop and STARE at us - only white folks to be seen around. Store after store with their windows boarded up from rioting. No a/c, but we sat there in the 90+* heat with all the windows rolled up looking straight ahead. Expecting any little thing would set them off. On the tv news, people were told to avoid the area at all cost and there we sat. NOT a good feeling!!! Hope to never go thru something like that ever again!
