Yesterday afternoon (4:30) we experienced a power outage. Only the second time since we moved here in Oct '04. Lasted til 8pm. We went to a neighboring town and got chinese buffet takeout for supper. Sat at the table with our big 3 wick white candle for light.
When it comes to candles as a light source in your prep, this is what I learned Dec '09 when the power was out for 25 hours - - -
We have many large 3 and 4 wick candles (and smaller) that I have picked up on sales and "used". They are of various colors all of them, to one exclusion - the white one, are "scented".
1 - For lighting - the white candle throws off so much more light than the colored ones that it makes the colored ones look sick! The white one "glows" therefore throwing more light than just what the burning wicks can produce. Each candle of the same size will have apx the same burning lifetime but the white one far out "lights" all others! We have an open floor plan in our house. The white candle significantly lights the entire area where I would need to place 3 of the colored candles to equal the same illumination.
2 - you DO NOT want to be burning candles of various scents at the same time!!! I love scented candles, but the intermingling smells can/do become overpowering!!!
Conclusion - If you are looking to add a supply of candles to your lighting supplies in your preps, white is your best bet in mho. I will be adding to my candle supply, and it will be ONLY white scentless candles. More illumination per candle size and no smells to deal with.
