Yours is coming this weekend hopefully, I had to think about it a lot. I can distill it down to the essentials and get the main ideas across. It is hard because your question almost gets to "how do you recreate civilization on a small scale, while maintaining interactions with the outside, so it doesn't suck and doesn't de-evolve into some sort of weird cult utopia thing, and so that you don't become a target from the same "outside" forces.
Because that's what an economy is, a civilization, the specialization of jobs and commerce and governing and non governing and social mores and so on. I had an excellent (well, I thought so..heh) piece written years ago before y2k about similar, but I didn't retain a copy, so I'll do it better this time, learned more since then, I'll throw a few more graybeard whiskers at it.
