Kinda creepy. But that's all those people know how to do for a living, buying and reselling contracts of various kinds, or involved IOUs.
In the 1800s they'd be salting gold mines and selling snake oil rheumatiz medicine and melting down gold coins and sliding a little lead in there or something.
No easy answer either, because society has got most everyone sucked into the "need massive amounts of money" in order to live deal, and that revolves around having to do business with those "gents" all the time, because the government has officially placed them and their "industry" at the top of the heap as "the way we do things...by LAW!11!!".
