Well, this is rather doomerish, but I can *not* argue with his projections of the outcome should the planet undergo a coronal mass ejection event from the Sun on a large scale. Toast is not the word. What he says here is exactly what would happen. He starts out with noting we had a smallish one hit back in the 90s and it caused significant damage to the power grid in Canada and took a week to really fix, but a larger one today would make y2k bad news scenarios look like a cakewalk.

I know IF this was to happen, I am taking a tractor, ye aulde ladee, extra cans of diesel, pets, and supplies, as much gear, food, tools, weapons, gardening stuff, seeds, medical stuff, etc, an assortment, as I can cram in the cargo box, and getting as far back in the mountains as we can possible get, then walking in further after that. Do some relay trips to move the stuff, then hiding the tractor as far in the brush as possible. I wouldn't even attempt to stay anywhere close to any city at all, even on this farm.
I've been right down in the thick of riots, tell ya whut, civilization to violent anarchy has, and could again happen in two minutes time frame. That's how fast stuff can change. If you have never witnessed it in person I can't even describe it adequately, Tv news coverage you might have seen just doesn't cover how changed it gets, how scary, how violent, etc and how *fast* this all happens. I don't even mean big political demonstration riots, those are tame, I mean general "to hell with everything" mass anger looting and violence hysteria riots.
With a big CME, you might have a small few day window when most people would stay home, holding out with canned foods and batteries and listening to emergency broadcasts saying all is well, be calm, etc, but I sure wouldn't believe it. My *guess* would be they would try and lockdown all the major cities immediately to stop mass exodus, on first knowledge from the astrogeeks the big one was on the way, but that wouldn't last long at all. All the dot gov fatcats would be helicoptered to mil bases and bunkers, along with all the rich folks fleeing to their "summer homes". The government would commander all the good stuff and transport it to those same bases to try and hold out as long as possible. And if big breakouts from the cities started happening, I would expect them to try and "control" it with any large scale lethal military assets they have still functional.
So I'd get out if at all possible at first reports of it even coming to hit, let alone waiting for it to hit, which would be way too late to get out of the big cities or even suburbia maybe. Might be a good idea to sort of think exactly where you might head, in advance....and if you were wealthy enough, nothing stopping you from burying/pre positioning very well packed supplies there in advance as well, because you might get only so far with a vehicle then be forced to hoof it.
just a thought...
Don't know about where you live (chime in with your local anecdotals here), but around here all the natguard armories have huge stockpiles of concrete barricades kicking around their parking lots, ready for use and deployment. The kind they can set in place with tractors and you aren't ramming them and getting though even with a big pickup. The government would use them and block off roads. And all those guys and the cops would follow orders for a couple of weeks, then like he points out..they wouldn't, and I bet a lot of them would go rogue looting because they are used to using team work and violence, they are trained for it after all. So, that's what they would fall back on. A lot of historical precedent there to prove that as well, in various previous big emergencies and wars when supplies of food and fuel ran out.
Hunter gatherer lifestyle on this planet could hold some tens of millions if they didn't war on each other constantly, but it would not support six billion people, not even close. I sincerely doubt the planet would even hold a hundred million people that way, because the breakdown in society would just bring out the human predator aspect too much. It would take multiple generations to calm down enough to reestablish even an agrarian based society type planet.
