I tell you, I have owned a lot of vehicles, and the most practical day to day one is the little king cab pickup I have today. I gets the second best mileage of any vehicle I have owned at 40 MPG (or so) (the best was a teeny tiny fiat sportscar at 50 MPG), it has a practical back seat/cargo area, plus being a pickup, you can haul more cargo of odder sizes, etc in the back. The two major points are it is smaller than normal full size puckups, and uses a small diesel engine. And the king cab extension gives it the functionality of a sedan with some room behind you for kids or say it is raining and you want to put your purchases back there instead of all the way in the back truck bed. It won't haul what a huge pickup will haul, but most of the time I don't need that either,(nor do most people) and the mileage gains MORE than make up for that. Heck, it's almost as good as a dang prius!
If I had the loot and the time and wanted to "invest" in something, I would go around the nation and start buying up every one of those old trucks that I could find (and they did make a station wagon model with the same diesel engine), and fix all the little things then sit on them until fuel prices spiked again, which you know will happen, then resell them for like triple profit.
