Was reading about people using unused microwave ovens to store electronic gear to protect against EMP. Even got to talking about whether unplugged power cord might channel in energy, gaps in chassis not stopping short wavelength of certain EMP weapons, gap for display/controls being big enough to let in much of EMP, etc. etc.
So I decided to do experiment, tuned my battery powered Grundig softwave radio to local powerful AM station first, put in a microwave oven with no power cord, closed the door and guess what?
thing kept working perfectly!
Strong local FM station. Some static as soon as door closed but the music played on!
Strong HF (shortwave), yup, still audible though much attenuation as soon as door closed.
Myth: Bursted! If a weak broadcast signal can get in, nuke juiced ionosphere signals are going to be dancing in that $35 walmart special!
Conclusion: forget about your microwave oven, your stuff will get toasted in there in event of EMP! better bet is some of the things zog suggests
