that would have to be older vehicle than most would think, solid state diodes in alternators started about 1960. then there's the condenser for coil, that's probably going to have dielectric get hole punched in it from EMP and those are on cars back to 1910s! without condenser to absorb back EMF of coil the points are quickly toast!
I wouldn't worry about footwear, can also go the wooden clog route or moccasins from canvas or carpet
funny you mention SE asia sandals, over there kids and young people would often go barefoot even on pavement or gravel or crushed rock, would wear shoes or sandals for dress but had skin like pachyderm on those built-in clod hoppers! That's what a certain SE asian lady who shall remain nameless had when she first came to U.S., but after years in west with socks and shoes skin is tender, can't do the Terminator Death-Foot of Metal Clomping Over the Smoldering Landscape thing anymore.
