The ideal cadence is actually nearer 120 rpm for real atheletes but almost nobody can train their muscles to do that for good distance. For competitive cyclists, we aim for 90 RPM and no less. If you do less you'll build up lactic acid faster, tire faster, etc.
I ride a minumum of 400 miles a week right now on my trusty road bike and we have cycling computers that, among many things, give us a constant readout of our cadence.
