I remember that after we started seeing the chemmies in the sky in '99 that there was some kind of flu (which led to pneumonia) that killed thousands of people and so many of us became really ill, me included. One physician's assistant who I worked with for a short time was taking a leave of absence from her job with a doctor because she said the deaths of so many of their patients from flu and its complications was really getting to her. The son of another lady I worked with worked as a respiratory therapist in two hospitals and told her that they were overwhelmed with cases stemming from the flu. I remember reading an article from the UK about the thousands of deaths from it there that year.
So, why was that flu epidemic (or pandemic) played down and virtually ignored in the news media while this one and SARS are/were 24/7 in the news?
Among the reasons that come to mind are distraction (from what, I wonder), control of populations, practice for some coming staged or real event, and the never ending greed of the pharma industries (and those who have their pockets lined by them).
