We've a nasty round of hopefully the more ordinary influenza at my kid's school, and of course hoping with the warmer weather that will be the last of it. Seeing the news about a dangerous swine flu popping up in Mexico with 60 deaths, and a couple cases already in the U.S. started me thinking about what it would be like to be in a type of situation like Hong Kong with SARS, where everyone in public was wearing masks and gloves to go shopping or to work (which won't filter out individual viruses but does cut down on the usual transmission mechanism of droplets of fluid). Now the CDC recommends at least a N95 mask, which filters 95% of particulates but doesn't have much oil resistance (like say if you worked in a paint shop or place with smoke from burning fuel). A P100 filter has the oil resistance and also filters 99.97% of airborne particles. The N95 types are about $20 for a box of 10 and P100 $30 for a box of 5, though bigger quantity discounts can be had. I see many have exhaust valve for cooler wear and less eyewear fogging.
