there was talk about six years ago of going away from depleted uranium armour piercing rounds in favour of amorphous tungsten or nano-crystalline tungsten (where the atoms don't have a crystalline structure as metals including the usual form of tungsten do). the idea was to prevent mushrooming of the round upon impact, instead shedding layers to keep a penetrating shape.
