The economic downturn has many people retreating back to the old traditional "many generations under one roof" model. Although not without its problems, the benefits of sharing responsibilities and costs are a very good alternative to camping out at a tent city homeless place.

With that said, seems another alternative-if no exiting family honestead is there to retreat to, is to purposely fund, within your extended family, a sort of neutral centralized little homestead where family members can go if times get tough, and it also serves as a family vacation spot. As in why wait for an emergency to strike? I seriously doubt we have hit bottom yet.
