I haven't watched all of the content. Maybe that wouldn't even be a worthwhile goal? The impression that I got was how I can barely remember all of the games or the conferences.
EA had a hostess who spoke like you should recognize her from the gaming community. I guess I don't belong to that community, then?
I knew that they'd release a FIFA game (haven't they been doing that every year for a few decades?). It was weird how they emphasized the UEFA Champions League, as if that didn't already exist in FIFA (I wouldn't know about the modern games, but I think I used to play in that tournament as Real Madrid back in the days of GameCube - it was part of their season).
Then, my mind is blurry, except for something called "Anthem." Basically, they're trying to suggest that "the gods" (who might they be?) didn't finish forming the Earth or whatever planet is the setting for this game. Therefore, the player has to finish the work, and there's some mumbo jumbo about "the anthem of creation." It seems to be a third-person perspective, with sci-fi elements and jet packs.
I think I watched Microsoft's conference next. Their head guy (Phil Spencer) just made gaming sound way too important. It creates community. Then why do players debate PC vs XBox vs PlayStation in the IGN comment sections?
One guest or developer seemed to be clapping for himself as he came out on the stage. Awkward!
The "Forza 4" game was probably from that conference. Whoever was presenting it made it sound like, "This time, the seasons change. And when there are seasons of change, the changing seasons change the game." Basically, that's all he knew to say about the game? None of the prequels had different seasons? Do they match the online version to the current calendar, and they want people to stay interested long enough to drive in all four seasons? I didn't know what he was trying to say! In the gameplay footage, it just looked like cars were driving in random paths (partly on the road, and sometimes through the grass) with no real destination.
Phil Spencer was kind of saying that they showed 50 games from a variety of genres. OK. To me, it just looked like most of them involved walking around as a human character and shooting things.
I didn't watch Sony yet.
Bethesda and Ubisoft kind of blend together in my head. "Elder Scrolls" must be a Bethesda thing. I do like the Middle Ages style of exploration and combat in "Lord of the Rings," but I've never played any of the games in the "Elder Scrolls" franchise to know if they're decent. For one of those games, I think it was mobile, and the guy was saying, "If you're in a meeting, play it in portrait mode with only one hand." Why would you be playing games at a meeting?
I forget which company made some kind of alternative racing game (dirt bikes). The footage looked like the virtual players kept painfully crashing into concrete or metal obstacles on the track. It would be hard to imagine enjoying the full game.
I don't know which company has the copyrights for "Doom Eternal." Those developers were just like, "We heard you requesting Hell on Earth. We're going to deliver that for you." That's pretty disturbing. I don't really know the plot of "Doom," other than how I think you're a human who enters Hell trying to shoot everything. So, is it at least a positive to be killing demons, or does the negative of, you know, being in Hell override all of that?!!
Ubisoft only seemed to stand out when they brought celebrities on the stage. There was a game where I forget the title, but players get to submit some kind of art, and then it would be displayed like a fancy billboard in the game. Joseph Gordon Levitt introduced that feature.
Elijah Wood wanted to introduce a game that sounded really messed up. "Have you ever wanted to enter your family member's conscience and learn all of their secrets?" Um, NO!!! The idea of a family having a bunch of secrets sounds pretty dysfunctional. They could just talk to each other as humans, instead of invading someone else's privacy.
I avoided most of the Nintendo "spoilers" until yesterday. I mean, Nintendo kind of "spoiled" things ahead of time by putting a Smash Bros. logo in the eye of an Inkling. So, not only was another Smash game coming - but, it would probably have Inkling (I remember buying that costume DLC for the Wii U game, but you might not be able to equip a paintball gun).
(Spoilers) Why did they put Ridley in the game? Mr. Sakurai was saying that the fans kept requesting him, but were they being literal or trolling? Is he trolling the trolls?
When I first saw the new "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate" footage, I wasn't that excited. :-( I know they brought back every character from previous games, but not many of them were missing from Wii U!! Do you know what else I was thinking in the past few days? If "SSB Brawl" was the game designed for the Wii, didn't that one include Mewtwo and Lucas once you met the conditions to unlock them? Then, on Wii U, they were paid DLC!!! I still don't have Lucas in my game, nor any plans to add him (or Bayonetta). I'm kind of thinking that Mewtwo debuted in Melee (possibly Lucas as well), but it's been a while since I played that version (or read my strategy guide for the game).
Then, I watched part of the Treehouse coverage where Nintendo employees were playing "SSB Ultimate." It STILL didn't stand out that much. Yes, there were some new stages, but one of them just seems to make it impossible to "edge guard," because there are multiple levels and open landing spots. The Great Plateau tower one looks too cramped, with the main "positive" being that someone can't KO you very easily off the top middle section of the screen.
They showed a tutorial for Inkling (I keep wanting to say Inca-ring in a Japanese accent), which made him/her sound like a difficult character to master. Your ink supply can run out, and then you lose the ability to perform certain moves (splat bomb), or your attacks become really weak, until you can find a place to shield + B for multiple seconds.
Finally, I watched the four sessions of the "SSB Ultimate" invitational tournament. My understanding is how they brought in eight professional Smash players, with two clear favorites. In my mind, that was kind of the highlight from all of the video coverage I watched.
The tournament bracket was a pretty strange format. Instead of straight up 1 vs 1 and four quarterfinal matches, they had two players paired up as a "doubles" team, against another "doubles team. If you won that, the "reward" was to play your teammate 1 vs 1 to knock him into the loser's bracket (double elimination). I think the losers from both doubles matches were also forced to fight 1 vs 1 against their teammate.
So, after those two rounds, they just had two semifinalists. On the losing side, I think two guys were knocked out right away from the 1 vs 1s. Then, the winners from those matches, plus the two losers from the semifinals were grouped together in a four player match with only ONE guy advancing.
In the winner's bracket, the semifinals sent one player straight to the Grand Final, and then the loser played the survivor from 4 player Smash to decide the other finalist.
For the Grand Final, they had a best-of-three set format (three stock matches), and it was possible for the player with one loss to "reset the bracket" and force another best-of-three set (which, spoiler alert, did happen).
In typing all of that, I didn't even mention how not all of the fighters were ready to be selected in that version of the game. I believe there were 30 of them, and then the players got to do a "snake draft" and pick three fighters each. They had to use a different fighter each time in the first three matches (if they even played that many times), but then they could keep reusing the same character.
In the matches with the newer characters, both of them had poor results. I remember Inkling facing Sonic in maybe a three stock battle, and Sonic finished with either two stock and high damage or maybe one stock and low damage. Ridley played Bayonetta on the Kirby stage with Whispy Woods and got EMBARRASSED! I think it was four or five stock in that round, and Bayonetta still had three lives left.
I guess the second part of the Grand Finals didn't have to be the same characters each time, but it ended up as Nintendo mascot vs Sega mascot. I knew that I had a certain preference as to who should win those matches.
In between the professional players, they also had some neat exhibitions. There were four "cosplayers," who used those same characters. The dude playing Pac-Man was wearing gloves and he still won! Another round was I think a guy I didn't recognize, Alanah Pearce from IGN, Andre the Black Nerd (YouTuber), and Robin Williams' daughter Zelda (playing as Sheik). I think Pac-Man (played by Andre) won there, too.
Finally, they had three celebrities I barely recognized: a diva wrestler, an NFL player, and Olivia Holt, against professional Nairo in a 3 vs 1 match (but no "team attack," whatever that means), and the professional (as Solid Snake) still won pretty easily (they didn't show the score).
********
Lots of typing, right? It didn't look like there were that many surprises or unexpected games from the rest of the Nintendo Direct video. For one, it seemed way too short! They started off with some obnoxious metal music (and I actually like certain metal bands), and then a name that's Latin for "Demon out of Machine." What's with all the demons? "Fire Emblem" seems to have a new game every year (still haven't gotten into that series). We already knew about the tennis game, which should be pretty good. I have no idea what other game includes cameos by the Star Fox team (I do love "Star Fox 64"). Then, it was basically the Ridley amiibo (not until December), and other stuff I haven't watched yet (a new DLC pack for "Splatoon 2"?).
I'm wondering if they'll make even more of the Smash amiibo that I missed, like Marth, Ike, Shulk, and Roy. I bought the Rosalina amiibo from the Mario series instead of the exclusive Smash version (with Luma). Some of the other exclusives were a pain, too. Why wouldn't Amazon let you buy female Corrin unless you signed up for Prime? I don't need Prime, based on how infrequently I've been shopping at Amazon!
Also, I saw a link on IGN about how "Metroid Prime 4" is still in development (not mentioned at all in the Direct video). Then, after rumors of an "N64 Mini," there was no announcement about that, either. Just from a technical perspective, I'm not sure how easy it is to emulate those games (but the Wii and the Wii U did - right?). Then, from a personal perspective, I still own my original hardware and play the "Star Fox 64" game a few times a year. I'm missing some cartridges that were sold without my permission. I should still have "Super Mario 64," "Mario Kart 64," "GoldenEye," and a few other popular games.
Better proofread and hit that Post button.
