I'm not sure what's causing my current paranoia with games and such. Toys R Us might go away. I know that the one closest to us closed, but it was already part of the announcement about 1/5 or 1/4 of the locations closing. I still need to check some other stores to discover their status.
On top of that, I'm kind of annoyed that I planned to buy games like "Rock Band 4" or "Mutants in Manhattan" for PS4. Now, I can't find them in a brick and mortar store OR on the website of those stores (Mutants is on clearance for systems besides PS4). You end up having to pay more or deciding whether to trust a "little guy" in the Amazon Marketplace who might not have a convenient return policy.
That anxiety could be extending to Wii U? I know we haven't played online yet, Rick! How many years until they shut down those features, though? It's also not like I have that many multiplayer games. "Super Smash Bros." and "Mario Kart 8" stand out as the best examples. In "SSB," I know I got far enough to unlock the extra on-disc fighters. I created a Mii for each subtype (maybe you can't use them online?). Then, I downloaded Ryu, Mewtwo, Roy, Cloud, and Corrin. That sounds like the full list for my game. I don't plan to add Lucas or Bayonetta. I should have most of the stages besides Peach's Castle 64 (however that works) and the Clock Tower for Bayonetta. In "Mario Kart," I know that I just started on the 100cc class, which seems like a lower speed than most online races?
So, all of that to say, here's what I would have in mind for my Wii U: have save files and the digital games I'm currently playing (if that applies) in the 32 GB internal memory, and then just have a back up of each save file somewhere else. Based on my current setup, or what I've been reading, there's no easy way to do that? (Just thought I'd add how I can't remember losing save files on Nintendo games, other than maybe SNES when they were used on XBand, but could that have been from the internal battery losing power?)
For starters, I prefer physical games, but that was impractical for the "Disney Infinity" series. Since I bought the first game's starter pack for the Wii (sans U), I already have a base and the figures. Any other starter pack would duplicate those things, which I wouldn't want to resell. I actually have THREE of the silly bases now, after three different starter packs (2.0 for Wii U, 3.0 for PS4). Thankfully, the figures aren't picky and can transfer to all three systems.
You can probably find a loose copy of the first game in physical form for Wii U, but there was a more attractive option. It was a FREE download from the eShop. That took up more than 25% of my system memory. Then, I don't have a Wii U version of the 3.0 software yet, so I went digital there, too (not even checking for an unbundled physical game). It was big enough to need external storage.
Well, I had already bought an external hard drive when I thought all I wanted to do was create some backup copies of save files (it's overkill to put those small files on a big 2 TB hard drive, but what else can you do?). My understanding is that, if you have save files in two places (internal memory and external drive), it will only update the external storage device. I'm not sure why they programmed the logic that way, but it wouldn't result in having two synced copies of your save files. It just sounds like the internal versions would stay the same, and you'd have the newest copies on your hard drive. As I'm typing this, I realize you can probably copy from the hard drive back to the internal memory to accomplish what I have in mind, but what a lot of effort! You'd always need to have the drive connected and powered up to load the newest save file. I just want those available on the internal memory, with the hard drive turned off to save electricity, and then do some occasional backups.
I mean, already, my setup forced me to use the hard drive for a game download/install. What I'd try to do, though, would be to clear out enough space to put "Disney Infinity 3.0" into the internal memory whenever I'm ready to play it, and then copy/offload some other files to the hard drive, plus leave the hard drive unplugged/"offline."
Does all of that make sense? I hope so. Then, I was reading about SD cards or even the USB "thumb" drives. Those have smaller capacities, which would sound perfect for some save files. However, I keep reading that the operating system doesn't let you copy save files to an SD card. Why not?!! I'm not sure if it has to do with piracy or the way an SD card keeps track of the file system (FAT16 or FAT32 probably don't support encryption or fancy permissions). That type of flash memory may not be good for repeated write operations on the same file (if that's what Nintendo had in mind). I haven't read much about USB flash drives. They probably try to draw power from the USB port, and I'm not sure if Wii U's ports supply enough juice. I have an empty USB stick, but I haven't tried to experiment or see what might happen.
Pretty much, that just leaves their recommendation of ANOTHER powered bulky mechanical hard drive. They're so advanced now that you can't find one with a USB 2.0 interface or less than maybe 3 TBs of storage. Wii U will only format it to use 2 TBs of the available space.
On a side note, I like how the data management screen tells you not to worry about deleting a digital copy of a game that you own. I don't need the bundled "Mario Kart 8" download, since I have a physical copy. The eShop seems to know I own a license to the game, though, so until the servers inevitably go offline, I could download another copy.
You know what else I've avoided? I'm refusing to do a "system transfer" from my Wii, since it won't let you pick and choose what to transfer, and they make it sound permanent. I'm not sure why I wouldn't want to transfer everything. Here's the neat part, though? What if I bought an SD card that would work with the Wii, and then I tested whether some of the save files could be backed up to that card? Then, I'd just need a second SD card (wasting money?) for the transfer to my Wii U. If I didn't like how it cleared away all of my Wii data, do you think I could copy it back from the first SD card with the duplicate save files? It sounds "logical" and like that would be similar to what I'm trying to do on the Wii U, if not for all these weird restrictions on using massive hard drives with their own power supply. I'm also wondering if you could take the backed up save files from the first SD card and copy them to the Wii U's Wii mode yourself, but I read something about how save files don't transfer to another system.
In other news, I don't think I've ever tried to boot my Wii U into the Wii menu. Would it work exactly the same as what I was used to on the Wii? One technicality could be how a Wii remote is only supposed to "register" with one system, so the ones I already synced to my Wii think they still belong to it. Would the one that I synced to my Wii U not work in the Wii emulation mode? I could read more about that. Otherwise, it sounds like you need three different remotes (one that I want to leave paired with the real Wii console, one for Wii U in Wii U mode, and one more for Wii mode on the Wii U)!!! I think, part of why I wouldn't want to transfer "Mario Kart Wii" or "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" onto Wii U's Wii menu would be the lack of GameCube controller ports. I pretty much play those games EXCLUSIVELY with a wired GCN conroller or the Wavebird. For other stuff that I just haven't finished yet ("Skyward Sword," "Super Mario Galaxy," "DKC Returns," ...) it might not be as big of a deal.
I even feel like taking my GameCube out and hooking it up! I can see it on the shelf in my closet, but I'm not sure if I lost track of the AC adapter or the A/V cables.
