I just got "Jeopardy!" (Wii U) in the mail today. Next, I should be looking for "Wheel of Fortune." Right now, it's a shame that it seems to be selling above whatever it used to cost at retail. There should be discs for PS4 and XBox One in stores that combine both games. Too bad I don't own either system!
Maybe last week, I was going through the list of all >1,000 Wii games (OCD much?) to see which ones I missed on disc or through the Virtual Console. From what I've heard, the Wii emulation of Virtual Console software is supposed to be the best. I guess the only trouble would be how you can't output anything better than component video with a stock console (I have a set of cables). From what I can tell, newer 4K TV sets still have at least one jack that can be used for component video.
Well, there's a slight problem with Wii's Virtual Console. It's being discontinued in 2019. Currently, it's still 2018, but I don't understand why they'd wait until 2019 when you already can't add more points to your online store account. That means I lose whatever points I haven't spent yet ... and I guess I couldn't buy "Chrono Trigger." Actually, I forget my amount of points, but I doubt it was enough to buy a Super NES game. I'm not sure why I focus on "Chrono Trigger" in particular. It's a game that people mention as "missing" from the Super NES Classic (Nintendo don't own the rights). So, there could be a Wii U eShop version, or else just buy an SNES console and track down the cartridge? I haven't tried to price that second option. I don't even know if "Chrono Trigger" is a game I might appreciate!
What other Wii games stood out to me? Would you believe there was a "Tomb Raider" game on that console? I assumed Lara Croft was exclusive to Sony. The IGN review said it was obviously scaled back to suit the Wii's limitations, though.
There were a few "Call of 'Shuty'" games for the Wii. That's not my favorite genre, but I wonder how it would have controlled with the Wii remote (probably just like the "Goldeneye" remake).
If you ever played the "X-Men Legends" games (I think they both released towards the end of the GameCube's lifecycle), the "spiritual successor" should be called "Marvel Ultimate Alliance." How can I describe the X-Men games? Remember how the arcade cabinet from the 80s or the 90s was pretty neat with multiple players? It's kind of like that, but from a 3D "overhead" camera perspective. You can destroy parts of the environment, too. There will always be four players to start a level. You can only control one of course, but if you're playing by yourself, it's possible to switch to another character. All of them can potentially die in battle or fall down a hole, etc. Beyond that, it's not just a punch, punch, punch, repeat type of game. They actually program some timed button presses or patterns to vary your attacks or have a special effect (like an uppercut, going by memory). Since it's the X-Men, you also have mutant powers, but there are even many varieties of those attacks. Like, Cyclops might shoot a wide beam with a short range, or a narrow beam with a really long range.
Then, combine all of those ideas with "leveling up," where you can unlock newer attacks and switch them in or out. There are stats you can increase in ways that could make each game different or push characters in a certain direction (a "tank" has strong physical melees and good defense). You can wear equipment to boost your stats, too. The enemies will keep leveling up to stay competitive, and some of them have a resistance or invincibility to certain kinds of damage (like, Jean Grey can't really hurt the mental resistant Sentinels).
All of that to say that I think they released two of the "Marvel Alliance" games on the Wii. It could be neat to play them, when you consider how there should be more than a lineup of just mutants. Iron Man was a bonus in "X-Men Legends (II?)," but this should also let you be Spider-man, Hulk, Thor, etc.
Other than those games, I noticed how there are some Wii titles for sale in the Wii U eShop. "Pikmin" kind of interests me after playing the attraction in "Nintendo Land" (despite how their game series shouldn't be much like the "Nintendo Land" mini-game?). I think the first one was released on the GameCube, but they must have re-released it on Wii with extra controls for the Wii remote? I can't even picture how the Wii remote would change the experience.
Remember the exclusive "Xenoblade Chronicles" with Shulk? The disc was apparently only sold by GameStop, but I see a discounted digital version ($19.99) on the Wii U eShop. I might have made the "mistake" of "spoiling" a major plot event by watching a YouTube recording. Basically, a human gets senselessly murdered, and the scene of a robot's red "fingers" is stuck in my mind. That would almost make me want to STOP playing the story! I get how they're trying to be "mature" and live up to a "T" rating. I jumped into the middle of the story, so I didn't really understand the context of the character death. If anything, it felt "sexist," based on which member of the party died. Hollywood keeps releasing movies where women can beat up anyone (men who are 140% larger than them, etc). The actual gameplay looks like something I might appreciate, though. You keep having to collect things just because, or help strangers, or learn new skills, ...
As if all of that weren't enough, what about the previous generation of consoles? There was a time when I considered buying an XBox 360, since it had the cross-platform HD games that companies weren't releasing on the Wii. Then, I found out that PlayStation 3 might work with my unusable PlayStation 4 controllers (due to not having a PS4 yet).
It's hard to think of that many interesting games I missed on PS3, though. I thought "Street Fighter V" was going to be a must-have for PS4 (exclusive to that console and PC?). I'm not an expert on the game, but the roster seems small, and I didn't like how the female characters are drawn like strippers. I don't know if "Street Fighter IV" is better in those regards. It might be on more systems than just PS3? All I can tell is that they released about five different versions of it: Super, Ultra ...
There are also the music/rhythm games. I can't tell if I'm decent at karaoke or not, but it interests me to be able to play a karaoke-style game. Then, from what I've read, the music game with the most tracks is actually "Rock Band 3," when you just use the microphone. I've tried playing with the guitar, but it confuses my brain how you have to change buttons AND "strum" to get credit for the notes. "Rock Band 3" definitely isn't a PS exclusive (I'm more familiar with the XBox 360 version).
"Rock Band 4" came out on the PS4, but now that the bundle with everything (no keyboard?) is scarce, people are trying to price gouge. I figure it's probably easier to buy a compatible microphone separately and just look for the bundle with the game and a guitar (not really interested in drums).
From what I can tell, a refurbished PS3 Slim is $110 from GameStop (if you can trust them for used consoles). That should be the 120 GB version. I'm unclear whether you're forced to install discs to the hard drive or if the online store still exists for digital downloads. There might be a 250 GB version, too.
So, probably a long post here. I wondered whether the Super NES Classic is still being stocked at most places. My best luck was finding 3+ units per store at a few Best Buy locations, but that was earlier this year. Right now, their website is saying no stock within 250 miles. What's the deal, then? Scalpers bought them all, or Nintendo recalled them? It drives me crazy how Nintendo stuff goes in and out of stock, but the "Animal Crossing" amiibo were on the shelf for years.
I never got the original NES Classic (it sounds like hardly anybody else did, either), but have they said when that's coming back? Maybe there would be an announcement at E3?
There are just too many tempting games on more than one console.
