Today, I've been SO distracted. Now, I'm trying to distract other people? I just thought it was strange to hear about an arcade cabinet being made in 2017, and for a really popular franchise:
I'm not sure what led to that discovery. There are YouTubers like Cee Jay Are (I think that's the spelling) and Metal Jesus Rocks where they show off their hoarding (I mean, physical game collections). Both of them have the stand-up style of arcade cabinet. I think "CJR" also has a sit-down style unit that's pretty modern (playing "Street Fighter V").
From there, I guess I'm curious how to make your own, if it's easier to just buy a refurbished unit ... In order to buy a cabinet, it sounds like you'd spend thousands of dollars, and what makes some of them weigh 350 pounds? I remember that CRTs are pretty heavy. I'm not sure if they would use solid wood for the actual cabinet.
There are other questions I'd have, like how to get the games that run inside of a cabinet. Legally, of course! I understand copyrights, and how hard it is for artists not to have their hard work stolen for free. The thing is, if you already paid once for a game on an old console or obsolete hardware, why shouldn't you be licensed to transfer the ROM somewhere else? Not DISTRIBUTING it. I would mean to a different place, for your personal and private use. That's where I think companies are too restrictive, or they want to keep charging you for every kind of license.
So, in terms of the actual YouTube video, that game doesn't look horrible. Some of the comments were pointing out the art style. From what I recall, Eastman and Laird gave up their rights to the Turtles? I think Kevin Eastman bailed out first, and Peter Laird completed the sale to Nickelodeon? I haven't watched that cartoon in a few years, because Nickelodeon may have moved it to a channel that's outside of my subscription package. Those character designs are MUCH better than the newest movies. It would be hard to pick my favorite version of the Turtles out of all the times they've appeared in different media. The comics that inspired everything else were drawn in black (I guess white where they didn't put any ink), and even when they got colorized, I think the Turtles ended up looking the same and with red bandanas (not just Raphael).
I can't tell how fun it might be to play. I'm not sure why Donatello is basically Raiden now (spelling?), or has a power similar to Darth Sidious from "Star Wars." I still play my GBA copy of "Final Fight," and how repetitive is that game? The one place that I do see variety, though, is in the enemies who attack you (some medium punchers, cheap one-hit punchers, cheap knife guys, acrobats, charging Sumo wrestlers, ...).
Then, I guess my reaction was to the guy making the video. Was he excited to hear the name Rocksteady, or did he not know there's a Rocksteady character in the Turtles franchise? I haven't read very far into the comics, but he might not be in those original comics. He's not in the live action movies until "Out of the Shadows." Then, is it me, or did he say "Shredder?" like it was a question? I think Shredder technically dies in the first issue of the comic, so maybe this guy only started reading from the second issue? The point is, you can't watch the 1980s cartoon series, the first two movies, the two most recent movies, the 2003 animation, the 2012 animation, probably EVERY video game, and not know about Shredder!!! Other than the four turtles, Splinter, and April O'Neil, who makes more appearances than Shredder?
Those were most of my thoughts on the video. I also read an article from 2013 about how "arcades" don't exist now, because of the economics? I haven't been to a "barcade" such as Dave & Buster's. Does Chuck E. Cheese still exist? We're not close enough to the mall from my childhood and adolescence for me to check what became of their arcade area. I was at a theme park last summer, and didn't really look hard for an indoor space with coin-operated machines. I also haven't been to a boardwalk in years. Those would be the places where I might expect to see some machines. They may have a game room at one local movie theater, but are the games profitable?
The article was basically explaining why it's a bad business model to try and operate a location that only has video game cabinets and expect to be profitable. How much does it cost to buy each machine? Thousands of dollars? If they're using a 55" HD display like the Turtles game, I know those can cost $800 or more for a quality model. The game runs on electricity. At least they used to save money on the indoor lighting, right? I didn't even think about how that may have been a way to cut costs. The article also pointed out how you can't expect to make much money off of "Centipede" in 2018 (or even in the 1990s). The more hardcore players would start to master the games, and since you didn't have to pay for a certain length of time (only until you died), it would be LESS profitable for players to start getting really good at the games. Then they'd want something new or much harder, and that poses problems (it costs money to buy a new machine, and casual gamers might not want to spend time getting better).
All that to say ... I wish arcades still existed. Probably the closest I had to that experience recently was at Nintendo's retail store in Manhattan. It was PACKED in the middle of the week, and I was playing games against little kids or people who were probably teens or early 20s - without parents acting like their children were getting corrupted by having a place to hang out.
I could see being a collector of a cabinet or two at some point, but they're expensive! The point of CJR's custom cabinet even seemed to be more about the idea of sitting down on a stool and playing someone side by side. The cabinet was mostly for show. It added the lit up "marquee" section and had a place to mount the speakers and a screen. Otherwise, it just looked like you can use a PS3 or PS4, connect it to a couple fight sticks that are mounted in place, hook up the TV, and it's similar to a home console setup.
