On to running backs, though:
(NFC)
Starter: Todd Gurley, Los Angeles Rams
2,093 offensive yards (1,305 rushing; 788 receiving)
343 touches (279 rushes, 64 catches)
6.10 yards/touch
19 total TDs (13 rushing, 6 receiving)
2 lost fumbles
This is sort of like picking Tom Brady? Even without playing in week 17, he led the NFL in yards from scrimmage, rushing TDs, and total TDs. He was the NFC's leading rusher. As a receiver, he finished 36th in yardage. Compared with other running backs, he had the fifth most catches, the second most yards, and the most receiving TDs.
RB2: Alvin Kamara, New Orleans Saints
1,554 offensive yards (728 rushing, 826 receiving)
201 touches (120 rushes, 81 catches)
7.73 yards/touch
14 total TDs (8 rushing, 5 receiving, 1 kickoff return)
1 lost fumble
Is there anything this guy can't do? Imagine averaging over 6 yards per rush when you're not even the team's leading rusher. He ranked 29th in receiving yards. The "logic" there would be how there are 32 teams, and all of them have a wide receiver. In other words, this running back, who would rank second on the depth chart at his position, was more productive than some of the leading pass catchers on other teams? He had the second most catches by a running back (the most in the NFC), the most receiving yards of any running back, and he tied for second in receiving TDs.
RB3: Mark Ingram, New Orleans Saints
1,540 offensive yards (1,124 rushing; 416 receiving)
288 touches (230 rushes, 58 catches)
5.35 yards/touch
12 total TDs (all rushing)
3 lost fumbles
It's pretty close between these teammates. I had to give Kamara the edge for total yards, more yards per touch, more total TDs, more types of TDs, and fewer turnovers.
Alternate: Ezekiel Elliott, Dallas Cowboys
1,252 offensive yards (983 rushing; 269 receiving)
268 touches (242 rushes, 26 catches)
4.67 yards/touch
9 total TDs (7 rushing, 2 receiving)
1 lost fumble
It's hard to tell if he's guilty of something sinister off the field. What I see in these statistics were that he missed six games and STILL finished close to 1,000 rushing yards!
Alternate 2: Jordan Howard, Chicago Bears
1,247 offensive yards (1,122 rushing, 125 receiving)
299 touches (276 rushes, 23 catches)
4.17 yards/touch
9 total TDs (all rushing)
1 lost fumble
I read comments that sounded like he got "snubbed." Yes, he had the third highest number of rushing yards in the NFC, but he had fewer total yards than Kamara and Ingram, plus fewer rushing TDs than Ingram. All of the top three guys on this list contribute in the passing game, but he averages less than 1.5 catches per game.
It shouldn't really factor in, but he also let me down in week 17 of fantasy football (0 points in a game where he actually played).
(AFC)
Starter: Le'Veon Bell, Pittsburgh Steelers
1,946 offensive yards (1,291 rushing; 655 receiving)
406 touches (321 rushes, 85 catches)
4.79 yards/touch
11 total TDs (9 rushing, 2 receiving)
2 lost fumbles
There's another AFC player with more total TDs, but it's hard to argue against all those total yards! The thing I noticed was how he needed a bunch of touches to get them, and you might expect more TDs from that many times of playing with the ball. That definitely makes his low number of fumbles look really impressive, though.
RB2: Kareem Hunt, Kansas City Chiefs
1,782 offensive yards (1,327 rushing; 455 receiving)
325 touches (272 rushes, 53 catches)
5.48 yards/touch
11 total TDs (8 rushing, 3 receiving)
1 lost fumble
His first NFL carry was a lost fumble. That means he didn't lose a fumble at all for the rest of the season? I'm also noticing that the AFC's backs seem to gain more total yards than the top backs in the NFC, at least at this elite level. They also had more touches to gain the yards.
RB3: Melvin Gordon, Los Angeles Chargers
1,581 offensive yards (1,105 rushing; 476 receiving)
342 touches (284 rushes, 58 catches)
4.62 yards/touch
12 total TDs (8 rushing, 4 receiving)
0 lost fumbles
I can remember when he didn't score ANY TDs in his rookie year (he wasn't on my fantasy team, though). I think the touchdowns this season are what rank him ahead of:
Alternate: LeSean McCoy, Buffalo Bills
1,586 offensive yards (1,138 rushing; 448 receiving)
346 touches (287 rushes, 59 catches)
4.58 yards/touch
8 total TDs (6 rushing, 2 receiving)
1 lost fumble
Aren't those stats incredibly close to Melvin Gordon? The way I figure it, though, you can only score a field goal if you have a bunch of yards and not many TDs to show for it.
Alternate 2: Leonard Fournette, Jacksonville Jaguars
1,342 offensive yards (1,040 rushing; 302 receiving)
304 touches (268 rushes, 36 catches)
4.41 yards/touch
10 total TDs (9 rushing, 1 receiving)
0 lost fumbles
For him to be this far down probably shows why I struggled in fantasy football this season? To me, it also suggests that the AFC was a little deeper at highly ranked running backs. If I recall, he missed three games, and played injured in a few more. You can kind of imagine that he could've rated a little higher with those stats projected across a full 16 games.
********
At fullback, I'm not sure how many players qualify for that position, or what kind of stats to check. Typically, you're not looking for someone to handle the ball? It's more about who can block for the halfback or guard against the blitz (?).
