(AFC)
Starter: Tom Brady, New England Patriots
4,577 passing yards (led the NFL)
32 total TDs (all passing TDs)
11 total turnovers (8 INTs, 3 lost fumbles)
He's sort of a no-brainer, right? I mean, this team started out 0-1 with a loss to the Chiefs. Then they finished the season 13-2. One of those losses was to the Dolphins on Monday night? I didn't watch the game to see what happened. Some people also argued that the Steelers' Jesse James scored a TD that would've won another important game, but then the ground caused a fumble, or some other weirdness.
The point is, Brady seems to have the same stats year after year, so the haters are probably jealous that he doesn't play for their team? If Peyton Manning even played at Tom's age, his arm didn't look as strong. Brady led the whole league in pass attempts and was fifth in qualified yards per attempt (not counting wide receivers, safeties, punters, etc, who only attempted one pass this season).
QB2: Philip Rivers, Los Angeles Chargers
4,515 passing yards (2nd in the NFL)
28 total TDs (all passing)
11 total turnovers (10 INTs, 1 lost fumble)
I actually passed over him (I just realized that's a pun!) in our fantasy draft because he faded badly last season and finished with 21 interceptions.
Other than that, have you ever heard him give an interview? I like him as a person, and it's strange how he hasn't at least played in a Super Bowl. I guess it's hard to reach that level when you're in the same conference as Brady and Peyton?
I feel like Rivers would be the starter anyway, because, doesn't Brady usually skip the Pro Bowl or opt out?
QB3: Alex Smith, Kansas City Chiefs
4,397 total yards (4,042 passing; 355 rushing)
27 total TDs (26 passing, 1 rushing)
6 total turnovers (5 INTs, 1 lost fumble)
I've heard him called a "game manager," or comments that he doesn't throw the ball deep. Based on stats, he only completed 13 more passes this season than last year, which came on 16 more attempts (a little more than one per game). He didn't even add to those stats in the "meaningless" 16th game. What does look a lot different are his yards per attempt, which led the AFC (2nd in the NFL), while setting career highs in passing yards, passing TDs, and QB rating. He accounted for almost as many offensive yards as Brady or Rivers by finishing 6th at his position in rushing yardage (more than 23 of those per game).
Alternate: Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers
4,298 total yards (4,251 passing, 47 rushing)
28 total TDs (all passing)
15 total turnovers (14 INTs, 1 lost fumble)
You could probably argue for him being the QB3, and I think his stats would've been better if he played in week 17. I downgraded him a little because of those extra turnovers, compared to the other three selections.
Alternate 2?: I'm not sure if they'd need to dig that deep, but it would be kind of hard to identify the fifth best QB in this year's mediocre AFC. Blake Bortles did a decent job for a playoff team. Andy Dalton reached 25 TD passes, but with only about 208 passing yards per game. Derek Carr also reached 20+ TD passes, but was held under 3,500 yards.
(NFC)
Starter: Russell Wilson
4,569 total yards (3,983 passing, 586 rushing)
37 total TDs (34 passing, 3 rushing)
14 total turnovers (11 INTs, 3 lost fumbles)
We're being "objective," right? Regardless of how I might feel about the Seahawks organization, nobody else had more passing TDs this season. His offensive yards compare well to Brady and Rivers, thanks to about six running attempts per game, the second most rushing yards at the QB position (even leading his team in rushing yards?), and he tied for 9th among QBs who scored a TD by running/sneaking the ball.
Not only that, but he wouldn't miss the game because of playing in the Super Bowl, and Carson Wentz is injured.
QB2: Carson Wentz, Philadelphia Eagles
3,595 total yards (3,296 passing, 299 rushing)
33 total TDs (all passing)
10 total turnovers (7 INTs, 3 lost fumbles)
I'm surprised his yards were that low! He missed the last three games. They might not have made him play in the 16th game anyway. If the league is about scoring, though, and he finished second in passing TDs (it looks like second in total TDs as well), how can you not rank him this high?
QB3: Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints
4,346 total yards (4,334 passing, 12 rushing)
25 total TDs (23 passing, 2 rushing)
8 total turnovers (all INTs)
You could make a strong argument for Matthew Stafford here, too. The only "weak" part of Drew's season this year looks like the TDs. The thing is, I realize he dropped to that number after NINE CONSECUTIVE SEASONS of between 32 and 46 TD passes per year (averaging at least 2 per game, in other words). It looks like the rushing scores were "sneaks" at the goal line, based on his rushing yards. To me, what gives him the edge over Stafford are those low turnovers (only one every other game?!!), his league leading completion percentage (but were they "dink and dunk" throws?), his league leading yards per attempt (maybe not "dink and dunk," then?), and a ridiculous 20 sacks for the number of times he dropped back.
Pretty much, you can understand that the lower TD statistic was probably a result of their two running backs, who may have been a top 10 combination in league history.
The Saints also made the playoffs (by winning their division?), while the Lions nearly missed the postseason.
Alternate: Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions
4,544 total yards (4,446 passing; 98 rushing)
29 total TDs (all passing)
17 total turnovers (10 INTs, 7 lost fumbles)
The story on him seems to be how the Lions won't support him with a decent running game. I wonder why not? I'm trying to even think of their main back on running plays (Ameer Abdullah?).
He has a weird throwing mechanic, but a strong arm when I've watched him play. For me, the turnovers were a concern (7 lost fumbles?!!), and he was sacked almost three times per game.
Alternate 2? If they had to dig this deep, I'd go with Kirk Cousins. It's REALLY close between him and Matt Ryan. I mean, they finished within two passing yards of each other! Ryan had the higher total of yards, while also doing it in fewer completions and attempts. The reason I'd put Cousins ahead is because Ryan only finished with 20 TDs. That obviously didn't hurt his team, because they have two talented running backs and are able to score TDs on the ground. For Pro Bowl purposes, I think you'd go with Cousins for his "upside" of 31 total TDs, which kind of forgives his 18 turnovers (even more than Stafford). Ryan had 15 turnovers, so Cousins also had the better TD to turnover ratio (31:18, compared with 20:15).
I think you could also consider Cam Newton if you like someone who can combine 3,300 passing yards with 750 rushing yards. He had 28 total TDs and 17 turnovers.
