I was trying to rearrange my fantasy schedule into a "best case" and a "worst case" scenario to see what might change. I'm not sure if those descriptions are really accurate. For the "best case," I made it so that my highest score compared to the highest score by any opponent this season. Then, our two second best scores faced off. Get the pattern? It turned out where my seven best scores were better than all of the other team's seven best scores, and then I lost two games by a total of six points (no more than five). Finally, my three lowest scores still would have beaten the weakest three scores I faced this season. Overall, that means I could be 10-2.
For the "worst case," I reversed my scores so that I had my worst point total when the opponent was at their best (but then, it switched to where I was having my best scores against their worst performances). Even in that situation, I started 0-5, but then I finished 7-0 (7-5 overall). That kind of makes sense, since I mentioned how my top seven scores were all better than the best seven scores that I faced?
How is my team 5-7, then? There's probably one other combination I didn't try for rearranging the points? I went in another direction, though. I imagined it like I was playing every other team in the league every week. We had one week as the #1 scorer (meaning we would have beaten everyone else). I think we had the second best point total three times, and we were third best two other times. That kind of sounds like we could've won six games? In week 5, we had a 16 point loss to the second highest point total, despite finishing third in points scored. It seems like that balanced out in week 8, when my second place score was two points better than the third place score. We never finished 4th in points. Where I really got hurt seemed to be the three times when I finished in 7th (never in 8th, though!). Combine that with two 6th place finishes and one time being the 5th best.
I converted that into a composite win-loss record, almost like what they must do in "Mario Kart" online. Like, if I was 2nd, that was a 6-1 record for the week. The composite record should be 46-38, which still makes 5-7 sound like "bad luck" . It seems to make more sense when you consider that my "average" opponent had a 44-38-2 record (53.57% chance to win). Pretty much, I was almost playing against a team as good as mine? I'm not sure what those numbers should look like over a full season. I've already played the last place teams four times (with a 4-0 record). I'm 1-2 against the first place teams, but I may get to 2-2 if I can hold on to a 40 point lead this week. Where I've struggled is my 0-5 record against the second place team in my division and the two middle teams from the other division. I'll only get to play Rachel once, and she might finish at 6-7 (after being as good as 6-3 or 6-4). I need to tie her and one other cousin to win the tiebreaker (total points scored).
This week, my point total looks higher than at least one other total that's gone final. Nobody else is "projected" to outscore me. That could boost me up to a 53-38 composite record.
The other thing I looked at was if I played the season two weeks at a time (that's our playoff format). Depending on which two weeks you combine, I could be 6-5, with this week's result still pending.
There's no guarantee of making the playoffs, but it looks pretty good. My cousin Rachel has Seattle's defense locked into her bench, but both defenses from Monday night are free agents. My cousin Andrew would need to defeat her, and he still has Ben Roethlisberger playing tomorrow night. The only thing that concerns me is if Antonio Brown misses that game.
If I hold on to beat my uncle, he'd clinch the #2 seed. I can't move up past the 4th seed, so I'd "avoid" him in the semifinals. That may not be desirable, because the #1 seed is projected to be my cousin Chris, and we've lost both times we played him. I know he's had Melvin Gordon healthy all season. Kareem Hunt has slowed down a little bit. Then he has Devonta Freeman returning from a concussion. That's not even the scary part. His two WRs (Antonio Brown, DeAndre Hopkins) have alternated between the #1 and #2 spots at their position this year, and it's a huge drop off even to #3 and #4.
My uncle could be vulnerable in the semifinals, since he drafted Ezekiel Elliott, who finally decided to serve his suspension. From what I've heard, he might not be back until Christmas Eve, which would be the start of the championship and the third place match. He also has Todd Gurley, II, which is a pretty good combination at running back.
On my team, Josh McCown is really carrying the QB spot (33 points this week on two rushing scores). I thought I was drafting Marcus Mariota to be that type of Cam Newton "dual-threat." My starting wide receivers this week were actually two UNDRAFTED free agents!! That's how crazy it feels at that position. I tried to "flex" Mike Evans, but he still hasn't topped 100 receiving yards in a game this year, and he's in a slump of not scoring TDs. I even had to drop Jordy Nelson and Demaryius Thomas due to their QB situations. Meanwhile, Tyreek Hill was amazing for my BENCH this week. There were a lot of points to gain from that Chiefs @ Jets game.
I know that I had two top 10 RBs coming into this week, but it feels like last year when neither one was in the top 5. I mean, to have the best chance to win most weeks, I'd think you'd want a top three guy at that spot. It even seems to drop off after the top four or five guys. Like, the #10 player who I have can get you two straight weeks of 3 or 4 points, as long as he throws in an 18 somewhere to raise his overall average to "8" or "9" points per game.
The last thing might be how I'm not really sure if you'd want consistency every week ... at least on defense. I drafted the Vikings defense based on 2016 (top 5 in a bunch of categories). This year, they keep holding teams under 20 points scored almost every week, and they get takeaways, but I still don't think they have ANY touchdowns from a turnover or special teams (Cordarelle Patterson went to the Raiders), which keeps them around the #12 defense in the league. Luckily, someone dropped the Jaguars during their bye, and their brand of consistency is usually a "floor" around 11 points.
Better see about some dinner.
