There's a point I could possibly make about "work" or being "lazy." Yesterday, I was frustrated with my fantasy team not being able to put together their first two game win streak (we've tried to do that about five times now). How is it possible for this team to be around the second or third highest number of total points scored, and they've had a losing record since week 3? I'm pretty sure they started 1-0. We may have been 4-4, but that would mean we lost three of the last four weekly matches. They can score 142 points in a week, and also in the 75 range. There's very little consistency.
So, what theory am I trying to prove by writing about fake football? It just seems like, the amount of hours that you look at statistics or want to set your lineup "just right" don't translate into a winning record. Well then, why do people say that life rewards the folks who keep trying hard and putting in the effort? The cynical side of me thinks that the gambling industry doesn't want the NFL being too predictable or having individual players performing at a similar level from week to week.
I know the NFL has been criticized this year for players allegedly disrespecting the anthem, the flag, and/or the military. Then you actually listen to their concerns, and they have nothing to do with any of the above.
I remember that Rick had an issue with the officiating or the replay system for a number of years. Based on visiting the Pro Football Hall of Fame in September, I think I understand replays a little better now. As a starting point, there always has to be a call on the field (instead of, we don't know, so we're checking the replay). Then, there's a difference between something being "confirmed" or when they might say, "The call on the field stands." For something to be confirmed, the original call needs to be what actually happened, plus enough video evidence to show that was the correct ruling. When they say that something "stands," it means there wasn't enough video to prove or disprove what actually happened, even with multiple replays or camera angles. I think it might be the hardest to "overturn" a call, because that would mean the video clearly shows the opposite of what was ruled on the field. To try and summarize, it sounds like there could be cases where a call was wrong on the field, and then the replay didn't help to prove or disprove it, so the system isn't "perfect."
Just on a personal level, it was hard for me to get every call right at the HoF exhibit. In one case, I thought I saw a play where a runner started to lose the ball before his knee touched the ground. I believe the ruling was also a fumble. During the replays, there was pressure to make a decision in less than a minute, and all I kept seeing was how the ball was coming loose before a knee or a leg touched the ground. Well, when it came to the real game and the explanation, I totally overlooked a rule where a player's FOREARM can be "down by contact," which immediately ends the play. Therefore, I was supposed to see an arm from the wrist to the elbow, totally contacting the ground, with control of the ball, and then a defender knocked it loose (after the play had ended).
Even in a live game yesterday, I couldn't tell why some plays were upheld or reversed. One Jets wide receiver was at least touching the ball while one toe of each foot was near the ground. Then, I thought he only made one step in bounds, with the other foot landing on the white stripe at the back of the end zone. PLUS, the ball was "moving" as his momentum carried him out of bounds, so how much attention do you pay to that? Does the frame by frame replay make it look like the ball is "moving around" just because he's pulling it lower to secure the catch?
After that, there was kind of a fade pattern to the tight end, who definitely came down with the ball, and probably had a butt cheek on the ground, while the defender made a motion with his arm that may have moved the ball within the tight end's grip (but never losing control or dropping it). Somehow, if he didn't regain "control" before his body fell out of bounds, that changed the call on the field of a touchdown? It was almost like when they use the term "a make up call" for something that was given an incorrect ruling earlier in the game?
Trying to get back to fantasy, nobody pays me to play fantasy, and nobody paid me for trying to run my own eight team draft with some special rules. Since it was only me making every pick, the teams held off on drafting tight ends until it made sense (the 18th pick, as it turned out) based on the number of points scored by "flex" players this season. There were whole rounds devoted to QB, backup QB, starting defense, and backup kicker. Every team needed to have a starting tight end by round 10, even if those picks weren't lining up with the flex rankings.
The problem(s) now would be writing or typing out each roster (three completed so far), dividing them up into divisions, and then setting a schedule. Oh, yeah. There's also figuring out who would have won each week (using this season's box scores). I guess I'm trying to find out if there are certain player combinations that would be more likely to win a league, or to see if I created an extremely average league where everyone ends up 7-6 or 6-7?
I guess all of that is to say, what does it mean if a person is "lazy" or "doesn't want to work"? I definitely have issues with my car or wanting to pay rent somewhere besides where I'm living now. In other words, I shouldn't "prioritize" fake football, then? I'm not saying manual labor can't be fun. This other stuff makes me lose track of time, and I'm not even thinking about how I just spent three or four hours on drafting a league that doesn't exist except on some sheets of paper. Does that mean you're not doing any type of work, or it's just not "work" that society thinks is worth a paycheck?
