: character selection screen seems to have 30
: or 36 spots? There are some characters
: where I can see them, but I don't think
: they're part of the game (yet). Rather,
: there's an eShop icon (almost looking like a
: padlock in your web browser). Since I
: bought the Deluxe Wii U set with Mario Kart
: already installed (this was playing from the
: disc, with the digital game moved to a hard
: drive that's connected to the system, but
: not powered up/plugged in), I should have
: some kind of code for buying the DLC. I
: wouldn't even mind paying full price for a
: game of this quality.
Yeah, there were 2 DLC packs released each having 8 new tracks (2 Cups), 4 new characters, and 3 new vehicles. I believe they were $8 each or both for $12. Other characters are unlocked randomly as you play and complete Cups and stuff.
: Is
: there a way to import a Mii, because it's
: hard to picture a Mii logo appearing on my
: screen. After I beat one Grand Prix at
: 50cc, it unlocked Roy (Koopa) from near the
: bottom of the grid. I read on Miiverse how
: the unlocks might happen randomly.
Yeah, like some characters being able to use a Mii is unlocked randomly. So just keep playing to eventually be able to use a Mii. Then, if you have certain Amiibo, you can use them to unlock various different costumes for your Mii to wear.
: The karts and bikes are weird this time,
: because it's not even like there are only a
: few options (as if five or six on Wii was
: "a few"?). Then, what are the
: statistics of each vehicle? Did I miss
: something, or does it not tell you? Are the
: wheels for show, or should you assume that a
: few of them would work better in races with
: "off-road" areas? I swear that I
: picked off-road tires for Peach in battle
: mode, but she still slowed down on parts of
: the sand (away from the paved track) in the
: desert stage. Is that supposed to happen,
: no matter what? I forget now if she still
: moved kind of fast in the rougher sand.
Going off track will slow you down no matter what. But the different karts/bikes and tires will have effects on speed, traction, and handling. When you're picking the parts just press "+" (I believe somewhere on the screen it even says to hit that) for stats so you can see how what you're choosing can affect those 3 stats thus allowing you to have a set up you like.
: When was battle mode ever fought on regular
: tracks where you could go forwards or
: reverse without a penalty? Weren't there
: usually specialized arenas?
Unlike a lot of people, I actually liked that in Battle Mode because it felt more skilled in finding and hitting people instead of the small arenas that just felt like random chaos.
: Speaking of which, what's up with the areas
: where your tires do the thing that reminds
: me of the Delorean time machine from
: "Back to the Future"? That might
: not be new to the series (since I haven't
: played "Mario Kart 7" for
: comparison), but I tried to figure out why
: running over this bluish strip makes it so
: you're hovering, even in areas that look
: like solid ground. Underwater, I kind of
: understood.
Those are "anti-gravity" areas. If you watch a replay or pay attention to the way the track twists, you'll notice at those times you're generally driving sideways or even upside down. Also, while the wheels are normal bumping a drive or objects like pinball looking bumpers will slow you down. But while in anti-gravity mode bumping other drivers or various objects will cause you to do a little spin and get a little speed boost. In that way, paying attention to your wheels can tell you if bumping is good or bad at that moment.
: I still have so many questions, like if it's
: possible to do tricks when you go over a
: ramp (the D-pad wasn't working for that).
I think maybe you can hit the drift button to do a trick off of a jump but I don't know. I always play with the Wiimote/Nunchuk and just flick the remote for a trick.
: There's "Mario Kart TV" that they
: added, but they left out something like a
: victory scene? I don't even like that the
: clips are maybe five seconds long, and then
: cutting to something else that's "out
: of context," and jumping around too
: much.
I LOVE MKTV! While watching a replay you can press "A" to bring up some options to modify the highlight reel. You can make it 30, 45, or 60 seconds and have it focus more on things like drifts or items or big hits. You can also focus on more than just yourself so if you're playing with friends you can have it focus on up to 4 people. Of course, you can also view the entire race but then it only focuses on one driver. Even cooler was being able to directly upload highlight videos to YouTube. Unfortunately on the Switch they don't have the upload feature.
