I forget if June 9th (Friday?) or yesterday was the EA event (I'd call it Pre3?). From what I remember, they had newer sports games. The big deal was how games like "Madden" or "FIFA" are adding/improving modes where you're sort of in a movie about a draft pick to one of those leagues.
They brought in a YouTube personality to introduce a new "Need for Speed" game, and he kind of froze up. That didn't excite me, since I'm not really into car games. Basically, the characters are trying to pull off "The Fast and the Furious" stunts of robbing a semi-trailer?
There was maybe a developer for this weird co-op game about two guys who have different reasons for breaking out of jail. How many people have daydreamed about being a convict who escapes from jail?
Obviously, their big license is "Star Wars." I'm not sure why the single player mode of "Battlefront II" tells a story that "hasn't been told before." Basically, you're a female villain, working for the Empire, which was the losing side in the sixth movie? Do they ever wonder WHY a story like that hasn't been told? Maybe it doesn't appeal to anyone?
The multiplayer looked OK, I would say. I don't have the best Internet connection to tell what the visuals would look like on your own console. One IGN commentator was mentioning how there's a lot of "verticality" to this one outside stage. I'm wondering why that would matter, if troops only walk on the ground and can't climb anything? Maybe a few have jetpacks. Then, it gets confusing with the way that planes can shoot ground troops or dogfight each other (a lack of focus?). I think a few of the older "Battlefront" stages were like that, but I mainly used flying vehicles to get to an enemy's command post and ambush them (usually hard or impossible by yourself).
That was the other weird thing. I had no idea how they were determining who "won" each battle, or the timing of when they would move from phase one to part two or three. I didn't see control of any command posts or spawn points. One side just got pushed back into a palace, and then the battle was all about soldiers with the portable machine guns (Gatlin gun?) making it impossible to walk through a doorway. I almost think I'd like the classic games a little better.
Going beyond EA, I think I read today that the new Xbox is the Xbox One X? Before that, it was the Xbox One S? Are those two letters different enough not to get confused? Does Xbox One X sound like a bunch of repeated babbling?
I do have a technology degree, but I'm not sure what was special about the specifications of the new console. A teraflop is ... ? Tera- is the suffix for trillion (one million million). Flops could be floating point calculations. The way I understand floating point numbers, they can have a decimal point (even if it's 1.0000000...). So, that's a lot of math, but what can it send to your display screen? Wouldn't you think it comes down to the games?
Twelve GB of RAM is pretty impressive, probably because it might hold the entire hard drive of the first computer we owned. That's basically the "bottleneck" that exists with most computer systems. To hold all of your games, you might need a terabyte of long-term storage. Then, while you play the game, the files need to be easily available in the "short-term" RAM. It's "slower" to read from a physical hard drive (and by that, we're talking about 100ths or 1,000ths of a second). With the RAM, I don't know how much "delay" exists compared to the hard drive (billionths of a second?). There just haven't been systems with an amount of RAM similar to the hard drive capacity, and that would probably be a waste anyway. Number one, why would you be playing every game at the same time, and there would be at least one "load" from the long-term storage to RAM (more RAM would just add time to the loading sequence).
I guess Sony is Monday, and then Nintendo on Tuesday? I have no idea, since I thought the whole event might be a week long.
