Even without moving on to another dungeon, the game feels satisfying in the exploration aspect. I mean, it's almost like two games in one? The exploring and the sidequests feel like they require the most time. I'd estimate that I'm 35 to 40 hours deep, and there's still a long list of things in my head that need to keep moving towards completion:
Finish mapping islands
Submit more pictures for figurines
About 28 more treasure maps
Collecting the Triforce
Fire and ice arrows
Use ice to freeze a volcano, get bracelets
Use fire on the ice location, get boots
(Bracelets and boots are needed for the two remaining dungeons before the last few portions of the game)
If I had the bracelets, lift the big stone on my home island
Almost forgot about helping the Koroks guarding withered trees
Is that enough for maybe 35-40 more hours? It may not be THAT long. The photos are probably the biggest task where I've only started to make a small dent. I submitted a fourth and a fifth picture during my previous session, but I had to talk to the sculptor first to activate the new figures. Somehow, a picture of "Tetra" unlocked about six or seven other characters?!! I forget if you'd have the pictobox by the time you're on the pirate ship (doubtful, since it takes you away from Outset, and Windfall comes next), but if it suggests that I may not see the pirates again (other than in a cutscene?), I would feel disappointed.
I wanted a Moblin soldier to be number six. Lenzo the pictobox man was obvious for number seven, but I think he'll be the 13th figurine. His picture was hard to take somehow. I had him follow me up the stairs before trying to run back down and catching the weird way he "powerwalks" or waddles towards the stairway. A bunch of photos said they were acceptable to the artist who carves figures, but I didn't like them!! Imagine doing that three or four times. Then, I'm only starting to collect other Windfall Island photos. I wanted Linda (meaning "beautiful") to be #12. I would say she's the most attractive human person in the game? I thought Medli was cute somehow as well. It made me anxious how the two little girls in the field are missing now, so unless they went somewhere else or indoors, I might not get their pictures on the first playthrough? Then again, the island could keep changing as you complete the other dungeons. Like, after winning one auction, I came back at night and saw a chance to sneak up on the girl trying to rob a safe, because I knew she gave you an empty bottle. It kind of made me wonder if you had to answer four or five questions that she asks "correctly," though.
With the islands, I'm trying not to end a play session with weird numbers that are mapped or unmapped. Once it got to 36 mapped and 13 unmapped, I didn't want to save until it was 37/12 or 38/11. I've at least seen a few of the remaining "uncharted" land areas, or I could guess at their identity: Tower of the Gods, Greatfish Isle, two more diamond islands, Southern Fairy Island. A few of them have to be the large reefs. I've heard the name Bomb Island. Hopefully there are still one or two more unspoiled locales?
I don't know how I'm still less than halfway through the treasure charts. There's a Horseshoe Island in the Southwest corner that apparently gives you two of the maps. I've bypassed a few of the submarines that you sometimes see, since I was below two hearts. They tend to reward you with charts, but not always directly for treasure. I think the lamest submarine so far had to be this crazy battle against multiple wizzrobes, where stupid chu chus and the miniblin devil things kept hitting me and messing up my aim with the bow and arrow. They literally never stop spawning right near you unless you kill every wizzrobe. For all that effort (which may have brought me to the 1.5 heart level), all you gave me was a chart showing every platform in the game?!! I'm pretty sure it was something dumb like that. I recognize that one chart is showing the square with Tingle's tower. One seems to be the five piece rock formation. There's also a fairy island and a diamond island.
I forget if that was all for now. This is a MASSIVE game when you count all the sidequests. I'm not sure when to play it again because the 130th day of the year comes this week, and I try to avoid 13s. I doubt I'll be finished before June, even though I wanted to try out "Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker" in June, with it being the 6th game from my collection (probably the 6th purchase, too).
The other thing was probably just how I needed a photo of the "Cyclos" lowercase "god" before shooting him down. That took a few attempts, and the "pictograph" mostly shows a pink or purple cloud with maybe his eyes peeking out. You also had to pay attention to how he moved in order to play the new song, but it wasn't that complicated to remember (down, right, left, up?). I didn't use the song to warp yet, but that's apparently the only way to reach a certain fairy. I kind of wanted to visit her BEFORE rescuing my sister, but a wiki was suggesting that she wouldn't give you the new items ahead of time.
You know what else was strange? I went to the Outset Island after clearing the Fortress, and my sister wasn't there! What gives? She might play a role in a later part of the story. I think the other girls were back on Windfall, but I've mostly been there after dark. For some reason, it's hard to reach Windfall in the daylight, but I learned the song to change the time of day.
Better get to bed soon.
