(Spoilers in this section, just in case people haven't played the game yet). Once you get the bow and arrow item in the "Tower of the Gods" (how silly to think of multiple "gods"?), it's kind of obvious how you need to shoot some eyeballs. I was a little disappointed by the size of that dungeon, with it being a tower and all. I did have to "cheat" by consulting a guide. There's another BIZARRE puzzle, where I kept trying to push a block or take control of it with a special song. None of that was working, so I did equip the glider, but had no idea what you were supposed to do. Somehow, you would know to use the block as a place to jump on top of statues near the wall, and then float over a barrier that looked like lasers or electricity? Then, I think I had to throw the ancient statue through the lasers/electricity, and it was invulnerable to those effects. After that, the way to turn the barrier off was too obvious. In the next room, you already knew how to solve the puzzle that's like a scale with a round platter or a bowl on each side, because that was required just to enter the statue room.
Even with the new item, I only saw one lower floor room on the map with an undiscovered treasure chest. How cheap is that? I forget how many were in the forest temple, but they definitely made it worth your while to go through every room a second time. Once you get past that central puzzle on floor two, it was like they ran out of ideas. Floor three does have a whole section with some of the most annoying enemies ever created (Beamos?). In other games, I'm pretty sure you could disable them with an arrow. In this game, I couldn't figure that out, so I stuck with trying to throw a bomb at just the right time (and usually taking a hit or needing three attempts).
This boss was just COOL. I haven't been let down by a single boss design yet (even though some fights are lacking a "phase two"). He did remind me a little too much of the creepy bongo thing in the Shadow Temple from "OoT," but all three sections of him could float around. I didn't get why you needed to shoot at the hands, or the pattern for activating the head section. I was OCD about wanting to manually shoot this thing in the "eye" sockets, and I pulled that off a few times with the Pro controller (no motion aiming). The fight didn't even use my sword. That guy did finally KILL me. It almost reminded me of footage where you see the "Guardians" from "Breath of the Wild" (which have a little "Beamos" aspect to them also) trying to obliterate you with a straight line of attacks. You also couldn't dodge by going into this trench around the arena, because the game treated that like an electrified zone.
Well, you do all of that, and then you get to maybe the coolest cutscene in the game so far. It's hard not to "spoil" that. Basically, I almost got a feeling of "Twilight Princess," and was the sound muted? It's hard to tell with my audio system, because the speaker wire is either bad, or some speakers cut in and out.
I don't think it's much of a spoiler to mention an item like the Master Sword. That scene was just OK somehow (I felt like they've done the same thing in "OoT"). The room has some really neat stained glass artwork that you can admire, which could also take you back to "OoT."
Then, remember how I said you didn't need your sword for the boss up in the Tower? Well, they definitely put your Master Sword to work right away. I lost count of all the Moblins and the Darknuts, who wanted to triple or maybe quadruple team me. You definitely gain some confidence from those fights. I might see what the IGN crew were saying now about how the combat in this game was their favorite. The Darknuts will draw back to swing, and you're waiting for the animation where they try to attack, so that you can counter by pressing A. The thing that's disappointed me the most with combat in this game is how the AI is really stupid, and they keep killing each other by all targeting me at the same time. It's pretty awesome when you can take a Darknut sword (bigger than Link himself) and use that to hit a Moblin from longer range than your own sword moves. I'm not sure if the Moblin spear thing can ever thrust forward when you use it, because it just seems to swing like a baseball bat for me.
After that, the boat (which may have been pictured in this underwater castle) tells you to go rescue your sister. Are you kidding me? There are still a whole list of sidequests!
At first, I was focusing on Treasure Map #1 (not even opening several more), and it looks like such a generic square island, but I'm sure I could find it eventually. With other maps, it becomes pretty obvious how that's one of the reefs with three, four, or five structures in the middle. One map is near a triangle island. How did it just CLICK like that and start making sense? The fish character said I'd have to feed him again to hear his tips, but I noticed something within the game where it remembers what he told you, and you can recall that from the map screen at any time.
My next time playing might not be until Friday, and I doubt that I'll make my way to the Fortress very quickly. Once you have the best sword, a bow with arrows, a glider, the boomerang, and some bombs, what's left? Those are kind of the staple items in several Zelda games. I do know that some rocks don't explode, and I kind of spoiled the item that breaks them.
I can't believe I'd be this deep into the game, and there are only 10 treasure charts on my map? I think the original had 41, and this remake might have 46 as the final total. I really hope it's not a case of digging up another map that leads you on a chase for even more maps.
So, yeah, I guess my feelings might have swung the other way again in terms of this being a solid game in the Zelda franchise. I won't be finishing it without any deaths. Boss battles have all looked good. There's still a ton of exploring left, based on the number of treasure charts. If some of the treasures are rupees, I do need a bunch of those for the special Beedle shop where he's charging at least 900 rupees for a chart and a piece of heart. Those were the two HUGE rupee purchases that I've noticed so far. Otherwise, it's hard to spend 1,000 rupees on the basics (bait, pears, bombs, potion).
