My history with Nintendo is that, growing up, we couldn't afford those "luxury" items. I felt lucky when we could own an Atari 2600, so I didn't have to keep playing at a friend's house. I believe my cousins were decluttering their NES collection around the time when SNES was gaining popularity and we possibly bought it from them. Then, almost right away, I wanted to use some birthday money for SNES (my aunt wondered why I couldn't just appreciate the original).
When N64 released, I don't think there was a line at the store. I could picture at most three or four units on the sales floor. Were video games still a "niche" hobby back then? Two weird parts to that story: This chain boasted in their name that Nobody beat them, but they've been out of business for a while (around the George W. Bush era); two was how I didn't buy a game for the system right away. I forget if the actual games were sold out, or if I just didn't have the money.
Anyway, my first N64 game was a rented copy of "Pilotwings [64?]," since Mario was out of stock at Blockbuster.
GameCube - My brother and I lined up at the launch, and we must've bought three games PLUS an extra controller. The line had to be 20 or more people, and it looked like everyone got a ticket for the system.
Wii - I was working daytime hours around those years, and I felt like I could wait until the shortages went away. Maybe I need some of that same patience in 2017? My system calendar would show when I first powered on the unit (it was a New Years Day).
Now, though, it's been more nerve-wracking since Wii U and amiibo, PLUS the NES Classic machine. I can't remember NOT wanting a Wii U, or feeling like I'd miss the launch. The problem was unemployment and being afraid to pay credit card interest. I bought a Madden game with a street date that came before the Wii U itself. I feel like I almost missed Wii U (purchased 11/10/2016), since they were somehow PULLED from stores DURING THE HOLIDAY SHOPPING SEASON! You would go to a Best Buy and see a pallet of XBox Ones stacked up, but Wii U went from maybe 10 in a pile to the retail websites claiming sold out. I didn't understand that strategy by Nintendo.
The amiibo story is how I was thinking, oh, those look like Skylanders, but less useful (only works with one game [Smash Bros.] or not with another game). There's a journalist Amiibo Jason who explained why that was probably "smart" on the part of Nitendo, due to this "logic": You don't just buy these amiibo for ONE game (like Disney InfINity or the Skylanders), and, no matter if you never use the figure, they look cooler on a shelf or your desk than a Skylander. He didn't say the Disney figures might not look cool, but I've found that I only bought the ones that I wanted to use in the actual game. I would probably add Alice or maybe the Jedi Kanan to be a cool display without really wanting to play as those characters.
I think part of the frustration with amiibo was, scalpers knew they were in limited supply, and they would be camped out at Target or GameStop. Even once they weren't so scarce, I only see a good selection at Toys R Us these days, and they cost more at TRU (but that builds my rewards points faster). Why on Earth did Nintendo make the Animal Crossing series? That seems like the biggest "mistake" so far. I know that there are BOTH trading cards AND the figures of these AC amiibo, but I'm not sure what game makes use of them. The "Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival" title didn't really grab my attention when it was announced. They might work with "Super Mario Maker"? I just think, in general, people are more fond of Mario characters, Zelda characters, Samus, or even DK and Diddy, than someone like K. K. Slider or the Resetti guy.
Never mind the Switch. I'm most frustrated right now with that NES Classic remake. Yes, I suppose I own both a Wii and a Wii U, and many of those games are on Virtual Console. I can play the Mario series on a Wii game disc (they're not the originals, though). I can play bits and pieces of those 30 games in "NES Remix Pack." According to IGN, though, the Wii U emulation of Virtual Console NES games is WORSE than on a Wii. In the review of the Classic remake, they showed how a bunch of the original "glitches" were preserved or added back to the games. Remember how Mario would go in slow motion if a bunch of cannonballs were on the same screen? Things like that should still be there on the Classic console. Now, Amazon does claim to have them in stock, but you have to sign up for the Prime service. I don't know if that's offensive enough for me to stop shopping at Amazon (only "premium" members can buy a product?). I thought I was a Prime member, but it says my membership expired. They changed from a one-time "lump sum" payment to a monthly subscription. In my last order, all I wanted were some books, with two day shipping. They came in a cheap bubble mailer, and that cost probably $6 or more shipping PER BOOK. Prime is a good deal if you know you'll buy things from Amazon every month, but who has that amount of certainty?
So, I'm not sure if I made a point there or not. With the Switch itself, I don't like how "Zelda: Breath of the Wild" might get a better version on Switch than Wii U, even though it was originally announced as a Wii U title. Otherwise, they wouldn't have released a new Zelda on the Wii U. At least the GameCube had "Wind Waker" before "Twilight Princess" became a dual release. "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" sounds like a remake with some extra DLC, but do they ever plan to reward the 8 million people who bought "Mario Kart 8" on Wii U with the new battle mode? You'd just buy the same game twice, with no bonus tracks?
Have you seen the new Pro controller? The sticks and the buttons are bigger, but they look FREAKISHLY bigger than even what you get with the Wii U version of a Pro controller. Both recent "Pro" controllers are wireless (which people say adds "lag"), so I'm not sure how they're the best option for people who like to use the wired (0 lag) GameCube controllers.
Probably too many topics for one post, eh? I want to like Nintendo. It feels like, if you waited a while, and checked some subreddit communities, there was an attempt to inform people about amiibo restocks. I eventually got a Gold Mario. Lucina had a huge restock, exclusive to Best Buy, but too many of them have curved swords. The question now is, should I wait much longer to pick up "Pokken Tournament" (not even a Pokemon fan), or "Star Fox Zero," which might use controls from the "Nintendo Land" games that give me the most trouble (trying to use both screens, instead of letting you look away or focus on the tablet)? I LOVE "Star Fox 64," and have probably played it 200 times. They say Zero is a remake with some extra stages and HD visuals (not crazy about the character voices, though).
