So, NFL games, right? I know a few of them this week were affected by cold weather or snow. It's nice for the Chiefs to sweep the Raiders, but what happened in that game? It looked like an example of why they should stop forcing every team to play at least one Thursday game per season.
Today, I was looking at some of the strange scores. The Texans won 22-17. Based on the box score, the Texans had six scoring plays, but five of them were field goals.
I was watching highlights of Vikings vs Jaguars where it just looked like trading field goals. In fact, there were seven field goals to open the scoring, but it finished with three touchdowns (the last two being scored by Minnesota).
There was a game with a final score of 16-11 that only featured one total touchdown. Of course it was scored by Doug Martin, who I kept on my bench, because that team was already deep at running back this week (Devonta Freeman, the #7 player at the position; Jeremy Hill in an exploitable matchup vs the 0-13 Browns; Frank Gore with a high "floor," except on Thanksgiving night). Let's look a little deeper at that particular game. It was the Saints traveling to Tampa Bay. Coming into this week, I believe Drew Brees led the league with over 3,900 passing yards and 30 TDs. He's known to have some hiccups on the road, but this was his second consecutive box score of 0 TDs and 3 INTs!! At least last week he threw for over 300 yards at home. This week, it was only 257 yards.
Even among the teams that won this week, I only noticed two scores in the 30 point range or higher. The Packers had five touchdowns, but it looks like three of their drives were 32 yards or shorter. Do you think Russell Wilson's 5 INTs may have been part of the reason? When you look at Wilson's TD to INT ratio, I think it will be 13:10 after this game. That team is still EASILY in first place of their awful division, and they were the #2 seed in the NFC entering today. The only way they could lose the division would be to drop the last three games and for the Cardinals to "win out."
Then, let's go back to Devonta Freeman, who is a major contributor on both of my fantasy teams. In a game where his team won 42-14, would you expect this kind of box score from him?
6 carries, 6 yards, 0 TDs
2 receptions, 12 yards, 0 TDs
I don't think there was an injury letter next to his name, and he entered the game averaging 20.0 standard fantasy points in weeks 12 and 13. The inconsistency drives me nuts!
Even with all of the field goals I mentioned, do you know what's strange? On the fantasy team where I have Cairo Santos, he hasn't even ATTEMPTED a field goal in the last two games. I think I saw the last one he kicked. It was a crazy late game in Denver where the Broncos tried to win in overtime on maybe a 62 yard FG attempt. KC took over with great field position, and then they had a short FG attempt of their own, but it had to ricochet off of the left upright and spin behind the right upright to win the game.
Pretty much, I'm in trouble with both fantasy games this week. I saw how our family league features about five other teams that are struggling. I happen to be facing a team that has 98 points even with an injured Julio Jones not contributing anything. Then, he still has Ezekiel Elliott (#2 RB) to possibly increase the pain. It's a weird "conflict of interest," because Zeke is on my other struggling team, and I'd need 20 or 30 points from him to keep things close for next week (best-of-two-weeks format). Then, I only have Justin Tucker (kicker) and Odell Beckham left for my other team, but the opponent I'm facing as a #1 seed in the public league also has Odell. He's already leading by 34 points (one player left for both sides).
It's just been a crazy season! Michael Crabtree has eight double-digit games as a wide receiver, which sounds pretty "consistent." The problem is when he scores 2 points or less (four games like that this year). Jordan Reed is considered a top 5 tight end, even though all of his touchdown catches have come in just three individual games. The thing is, you wouldn't want to sit him in favor of Kyle Rudolph (12 points today), because this week might be that next 21 point game! Of course you can "average" 11 points per week, but what they might not tell you is that the pattern is 18, 4, 19, 3, 21, 1, ... which gives you maybe a 50% chance to win a weekly matchup.
