I know that I've played a bunch of Mario games on various systems. One of the best open world versions, still to this day, has to be "Super Mario 64." I wasn't sure if that would be the idea in "3D World." "Super Mario World" is a pretty cool game in its own right.
Well, from the start of this game, it doesn't remind me much of any other Mario experience! You're saving some kind of fairies? It's different from "Super Mario 64" or even "Super Mario Galaxy" in the sense that there's an overworld (a la the trend started by "Super Mario Bros. 3"). Of course, it wasn't immediately obvious to me that I was walking in an overworld. I thought that was the main game. You have to jump into each stage?
I didn't even read the instruction manual (it's apparently stored on the game disc itself?) before trying to see whether things might come intuitively or not. What is that thing that turns you into a cat? A bell? How does that say cat? Then again, how does a leaf say flying racoon? I like the way you're able to climb up walls (within a time limit), but to me, it almost makes it feel less valuable to walk around as regular Mario or fire Mario. I like how you can store an extra power-up or swap them (taking me back to "Super Mario World"). Some things are reminiscent of other Mario games (collect the eight red coins). I've collected three coins or some kind of symbol in other games, but when did the green stars enter Mario games? Why green? I like how they act as a way to unlock the castle, but I'm wondering what you get for collecting all of them (no spoilers please!). My guess would be a Star Road kind of thing from "Super Mario World."
In terms of the actual courses, I'm not sure if I really dig the 3D style. It's harder to die from just falling in a pit (a positive). I'm not sure about fighting enemies in a 3D space. Should I pay attention to their shadows? What's up with blocks that are kind of glittery and warp you somewhere else? Why can't I backtrack from a checkpoint to the green star I just missed?
The level designs are a little strange to me. When you're in the level where you have to figure out how to change switches until they're all activated it's fun, but another time, I was just riding this dinosaur down a waterfall and it felt really cheap or not like a Mario game.
Basically, a really mixed bag so far. I noticed how the GamePad was already low on power (I just charged it up this afternoon!) when I got to the stage where you have to keep touching the platforms to raise them. That makes me think player 1 is always stuck using the GamePad? I was hoping that the Pro controller could take over at some point. I know there are four characters (a "Super Mario Bros. 2" vibe), and I think I've already spoiled the way that there's another character. So far, I've only played as Mario.
Two other things: Maybe the neatest mini-game is how they showed you the inspiration for "Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker." Then, my biggest disappointment: ZL is how you enter a vertical pipe?!! That's practically heresy in a Mario game. I understand how pulling down on the L stick might not register as "down" in a 3D space. Then the right stick is camera controls. Couldn't D-pad down be used instead of ZL?
Pretty much, that's my first impression. It's not a bad game, but I wish the levels felt more focused. Sometimes, I think all I want is an underground level or a water level, but they keep changing things up on you within World 1 (not sure about World 2 yet). Your water level becomes a place where you're forced to ride a dinosaur, and then the shadow stage (in World 2?) reminds me of "Donkey Kong Country Returns" somehow. It also makes getting one star almost too easy (Oh, what's that obvious reflection on the wall?).
