Today, I tried to figure out what you can do without a Nintendo Network ID. Not even the YouTube app? At first, it was telling me that YouTube itself had to download an update. Once you got the update, then the messages came about needing an ID.
Guess what, though? You can just open the web browser and navigate to YouTube instead. The browser is definitely a different experience than using a computer, but it's not that hard to figure out even before I've read the full instructions. There are ways to zoom in or out. Your stylus is kind of the mouse, but then it's ALSO the "keyboard" that helps you "type" things.
I think I was mostly watching music videos. Toto sings the cool song "Africa." They also have one called "Rosanna" (not very good audio quality on that file). If you want to watch/hear the parody of "Rosanna," you can search for "Apologetix Hosanna."
I think the GamePad screen is pretty cool as a viewer. I haven't owned a smartphone yet, but I'd assume the videos would look similar. Somehow, for me, the video tends to look the best by focusing on the GamePad. For "Africa," that makes sense, because the original must not be high definition (maybe not even digital, until they converted it). Even on some HD clips, I'm trying to figure out the difference. The colors or the brightness might look better on a small screen. My TV is kind of a bargain model. Then, the files themselves might be compressed, which tends to create inaccurate shades of color. Pretty much, the better the resolution of the YouTube clip itself, the higher the probability of it looking good on both screens.
Then I noticed the flashing red light on the GamePad. I'm not sure how long I had been using it, starting from last Friday or Saturday. On the first charge, it took about 2 hours and 33 minutes for the light to turn off. Today, I would guess it was over two hours (powered down) to get back to a full charge.
Around 5:00, I set aside some time for the Nintendo Network ID. The longest part was reading that whole agreement and the privacy policy. I might be one of the only people who reads those. It's amazing what you're agreeing to on the "privacy" side. I definitely locked my name in as WillR816. Now I'm not sure how that works as far as people being able to find me or exchanging friend codes. Do you have to open the confirmation e-mail to activate your account? I was going to wait a day or two before doing that part.
So, there would still be things I'd like to open or try for the first time (eShop, MiiVerse, ...). Then, oh yeah. This is a game system, right? Before I can potentially play one of the games, I'd probably have to "pair" a Wii Remote Plus. I wanted to make "Nintendo Land" the first game that I play. I just wasn't sure if it would try to install an update. That's one quirk I didn't mention with the software and updating. I thought I turned off automatic updates in the settings, but it downloaded operating system 5.5.1 U without me knowing. I just had to reboot and let it install (then reboot again). The 5.5.1 update notes only mention small changes.
That's kind of the story for today. I remember saying or thinking that the operating system all by itself was pretty interesting. Today, I kind of felt like, why are three Miis talking at the same time? I wish that was a little more focused or that it only showed you the word bubbles when you zoom in.
