: past Super Bowl... yeah, this year is #50.
: The first one was played on 1-15-67 so the
: one played at the end of this season will be
: 2016 thus being the 50th one.
I just meant that, let's say you got married on 1/15/1967. Is 1/15/2016 your 50th anniversary? Computers seem to do things differently. They'll count from 0, and then you know when it's been 50 years. Birthdays are strange like that, too. I mean, by the time you're about three months old, it's about a year since you were conceived. You really just count the anniversaries of a birthday (something that only happened once), and when you're "one year old," you've lived on that date twice, and are just about to start your second year.
: And as far as matchups, ever since they
: re-aligned with 8 divisions of 4 teams,
: there's no guess work to which teams will
: play each other each year. So if there seem
: to be more past Super Bowl matchups than
: previous years, it's pretty much just luck
: of the draw.
:
: You play each of your division teams twice
: (6 games), you play a 3-year rotating cycle
: of every opponent in a division within your
: conference (4 games), you play a 4-year
: rotating cycle of every opponent in a
: division in the opposite conference (4
: games) which leaves 2 games that are filled
: by the team in the other 2 divisions in your
: conference that finished in the same place
: within their division as your team in your
: division.
It's just strange how so many of the divisions aligned that way for a milestone number of the Super Bowl. I guess that a schedule only repeats about every 12 years (minus the games based on your standing), because there are only three other divisions to play in your conference, but the out of conference games take a full four seasons to rotate (even then, I have a feeling they might flip the home and away pairings).
You know what else I've wondered? Is there ever a season where the AFC East is playing the NFC East, North vs North, and so on? I don't think I've noticed it, and maybe some of that is intentional, based on travel distances? Maybe not, though. I'm just thinking about how a team like the Ravens are 2-6 right now. If you look at their schedule, they're in the part of the rotation where they play the whole AFC West AND the whole NFC West in the same season. So, I think they've already had to travel to Oakland, then Arizona last Monday night, and probably San Francisco in between.
I kind of like the two "flex" games in the schedule, since a fourth place team isn't "punished" with having to play the Patriots or the Broncos, unless it's that time in the divisional rotation. Then, if you win a division year after year after year (which mostly seems to apply to those two AFC teams I mentioned), you know it's because that team played one of the hardest possible schedules (assuming the first place teams from last season don't regress too much).
