This season, I'm registered at NFL.com. I just can't figure out whether to do Pick 'Em and Eliminator through them or ESPN.
There's another cool game (on NFL.com): Record Breaker. I don't know if it's new or not. The idea is where you pick some type of record (passing yards, rushing TDs, ...), and you're allowed to pick one player each week to see if those cumulative stats are enough to break the record. I think I'll be trying to break the oldest offensive record they have listed: rushing yards in one season. Based on last year's weekly leaders, it would've been mathematically possible to do last season. I remember something like 2,600 yards total for all 17 weeks. One thing I don't understand yet is, do they let you pick all 17 weeks? And then, would they automatically drop your lowest yardage? The thinking is, when the real individual players set those records, they only played a 16 game season (or 14, but I don't think any records are left from a 14 game regular season). Why would they give you an extra week to pad those stats?
So far, I only calculated passing yards, passing TDs, and rushing yardage. For the passing yards, it would've been possible to average about 400 of them PER WEEK last season if you kept picking the top QB every time. Is that insane, or what? Even by dropping the lowest total (somewhere in the 340 or 350 range), I think you'd still set a new record by about 900+ yards. Passing TDs was definitely possible. I totaled 73 of those, or 70 based on a 16 game schedule and dropping the lowest number.
I'm wondering if there might EVER be an individual halfback to challenge the single season record (2,105?). Adrian Peterson was really close one time. My thinking is, it's probably NOT going to come from one of the guys who is limited to 15 carries per game. At that rate, you'd only run the ball 240 times in a full season. That means you'd need to average more than 8.77 yards per carry to break the record. According to pro-football-reference.com, the highest qualifying yards per carry stats in a single season were by Michael Vick and Beattie Feathers (8.4 yards/rush). Feathers was apparently a halfback/wingback. Vick was obviously a QB. Jamaal Charles seems to be the active leader in career yards/carry by a running back, with 5.5. At that rate, he could break the record on his 383rd carry, meaning almost 24 per game. I think even 300 carries in a season seems to be taboo nowadays.
I would view rushing TDs as the toughest record, if only because those scores seem more limited now, or specialized (you might not even hand the ball to your "20 to 20" back near the goal line). Last year, you could've combined DeMarco Murray and Marshawn Lynch, but they wouldn't have even tied the record. Matt Asiata had 11 games with 0 TDs. The trick was to start him in week 4 or week 9 (3 rushing scores each time). Those performances helped him tie Jamaal Charles and Eddie Lacy (my fantasy backfield) for third place.
I've never done an "eliminator" pool (pick exactly one winning team per week, without using a team twice). ESPN seems to let you keep picking, even if you lose before week 17. There was a massive tie on the leaderboard among all the first place entries who went undefeated.
So, just wanted to put that out there. I'm STILL being lazy with my fantasy rankings. I know ESPN has their projections. I actually have the printouts from 2014 saved, to see where they underrated someone (Ben Roethlisberger, Eli Manning) or they were WAY overrated (Robert Griffin III). I don't know how I made some of the calls I did last year. Steve Smith, Sr. after switching teams? He had to keep pushing off to create space, and tapered off in the second half, but he was keeping us afloat until I picked up Odell Beckham, Jr. as a FREE AGENT. Martellus Bennett actually gave me this weird problem at TE. He and Greg Olsen were within about two or three ranking spots of each other all year, so it was like you couldn't really go "wrong" with either one, but it was probably lower than 50/50 odds of starting the guy who scored more points for that specific week. Matt Ryan and Philip Rivers were almost the same deal. I wouldn't want to draft both of them together in 2015, only because they have a bye on the same week. That kind of thing is probably better when you can get the #5 and #7 RB or WR (since their positions have two open slots).
