Apparently, when it did, that game was still about the player taking the role of "Jumpman" (Mario). I believe the sequel was "Donkey Kong, Jr."? Regular DK was the prisoner/hostage in that game (so, non-playable). "Donkey Kong 3" sounds like he made a comeback as a "villain," with the player having a role of "Stanley" (Mario's cousin, who probably hasn't been in any other games?).
When I think of "Super Mario Kart," who was the DK character? It could be DK, Jr., but I haven't played that version in a while. Here's where things get interesting. "Donkey Kong Country" (an SNES series when Rare made the games) introduced a controversy over contemporary DK's relationship to 8-bit DK/"Cranky Kong." If Cranky is the father of contemporary DK (he looks too old for that relationship), then contemporary DK could actually be the same "DK, Jr." from games like "Donkey Kong, Jr." and "Super Mario Kart." What throws me off is how, starting from the series of games by Rare, they gave contemporary DK a soft serve ice cream swirl hairstyle. Also, Cranky could've had more than one son.
When you get to N64, I remember another DK, Jr. cameo in "Mario Tennis," while they didn't really use the visual style of contemporary DK from "Donkey Kong Country" or "Donkey Kong 64." That could just be due to copyright issues. I also picture DK, Jr. still being really young in "Mario Tennis."
If contemporary DK is the GRANDson of Cranky Kong/retro DK, then the only "continuity" issues might be how old he looks compared to DK, Jr. (which may be his dad or just an uncle). Also, which I think I already mentiioned, how cheap is it that contemporary DK isn't playable in "DKC 2" or "DKC 3"?
When you finally get to "Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze," I know that you get to play as retro DK, for what seems like the first time since Game & Watch. To make it sweeter, I'm pretty sure it's the only time you've been able to play as both characters known as Donkey Kong, and it would be the first time in the "DKC" series that contemporary DK is playable in consecutive titles.
Basically, I'm just trying to picture which "DK" face goes on the mountain (young retro DK; Cranky; DK, Jr. [if he's actually the same character as contemporary DK]; contemporary DK ...). I guess the one that's immortalized as an amiibo and has made the most headline appearances and cameos is contemporary DK.

: If I'm thinking in terms of 4 characters, to
: resemble how Mount Rushmore is 4 faces, I'd
: probably have to go with Pac-Man, Mario,
: Donkey Kong, and Sonic. Sure they're
: basically retro characters but they're also
: still around today in games and they are
: beloved characters that people like. Even
: young kids today tend to at least know the
: characters even if they don't know their
: histories. :-)
