I believe I'm an overall one star rating. Instead of trying to improve that in Grand Prix mode (where the stats say the computer hits me at about a 2:1 ratio compared to me using items on them), I've been in the time trials.
One thing I've wondered about the game is whether you're supposed to use automatic or manual drifting. Maybe that's the wrong question, or it depends on the track. At first, I didn't really know the difference. The help screen just tells you how the automatic setting won't even let you hop around. How often is hopping helpful, though? I'm not sure, outside of courses like Sherbet Land and Shy Guy Beach.
What I do know is that my course times have gotten much better with the automatic drift. It's hard to explain. In manual drift mode, I really like the mini turbos. Somehow, by not losing speed in automatic mode, that's better than a mini-turbo? That's what it seems like.
I wonder what people were using online (back when it was still active). I never really got used to the Wii wheel. Maybe that would change if I were to combine it with auto drift?
Right now, in the time trials, I want to do a project where I use all the vehicles three times on each course and see what ends up with the best results. I'm not even sure if I'd have to get that carried away. I believe there are 36 vehicles total? Then, three races each, on 32 tracks? I'd be racing for a while (over 3,000 times by my estimate). Then, what if I do three automatic drift and three manual?
I'm not sure if Rick's times are all accurate, but I've only passed him on maybe 1/3 of the courses. There are some courses where I've probably raced 5-10 times total, and before I found out about the auto drifting. On the first Cup, I think I'm within a few tenths of a second in Luigi Circuit. It seems like you need to use a heavy driver and the Spear there. That race is flat out speed, with only a few minor turns, and not really any obstacles. I'm not sure of the best place to use the mushrooms (there are probably lots of YouTube videos). In Moo Moo Meadows, I think I've got the line of the track figured out, but I can't see where I could save 3-5 more seconds. The cows are annoying, since the faster you go, the more likely they'd actually be in the way of you taking a tight corner. In Mushroom Gorge, I haven't really tried the fast vehicles yet. Just using standard karts, I was making the leaderboard. Rick's time is about 6 or 7 seconds faster right now.
Then, at Toad's factory, it's a timing thing again. If you get to that early part with the green conveyor belt too soon, the machines crush down from above. In the curly tunnel, the green belt is on the left for both the second and third laps (or I'm showing up right as it changes). I saw how Rick had a time in the 2'07" range. Then, with Diddy on the Mach Bike, I went 2'06" and change.
So, just wondering about all of that. At this point, I think I've unlocked every vehicle (the last kart for the medium weight drivers took a while). You know what else is weird? I could be wrong, but, when they show all the ratings for each vehicle, does any bar EVER fill the whole space from left to right? In the speed rating, I don't think it ever does. It's possible that one of the categories does get that high, so maybe they just use the longest bar for every category?
There was something else I wanted to post about. Maybe I'll do that next.
