From what I could tell, if you actually live near one of maybe four Best Buy stores that hosted the qualifying round, they picked two "winners" per store, and the final tournament was between those eight players. Someone pointed out on Facebook, it was limited to the US, so why the idea of a "World Series" champion?
Parts of it kind of felt like they were just promoting new content (games and DLC). That was kind of cool, because if they ended up playing a game that's not even released yet (too much of a hint or spoiler there?), it should theoretically be "fair" to all of the players.
There was this weird interlude with Reggie Fils-Aime talking way too much trash and trying to play a professional in a popular franchise.
I wasn't really able to follow the panel of commentators. Kevin Pereira (or Ferrara?) got to host. I think I recognize him from what used to be "Tech TV" (now G4 or something weird - DirecTV dropped them years ago). What does he have to do with gaming? I recognized the name Audrey, and a petite woman who sounded like a former IGN reviewer. The thing is, that Audrey had dark or reddish hair. This one had solid blonde. Of course, there's nothing to stop her from changing her looks and finding a job with Nintendo. I've noticed that she doesn't seem to appear in IGN videos anymore.
Around 9 PM local, the stream was doing this weird looping thing every 5 seconds, until I clicked live again. I eventually refreshed the page and that fixed it somehow.
Overall, I'd say the best player won, especially if you saw the last four challenges, and even the round that served as a semifinal. The prize was pretty neat, but almost seemed like an item a Nintendo diehard might already own. OK, so autograph it. Now I'd be afraid to use it for the intended purpose! Maybe the autograph was in "permanent ink" or something.
I can't really keep up with E3 news as it happens (too much homework), but I hope there's plenty of content to watch sometime in July.
