First of all, you want to talk about "scripted"? How did Seattle reach the Super Bowl in the first place? They gambled in the NFC championship game several times, and it didn't end up hurting them. When you're down 0-16, do you draw up a fake field goal where the punter throws to an offensive lineman for the TD? Maybe ... if you're playing Madden!
The last few minutes of that game were just ridiculous, and it looked like Green Bay was part of a "conspiracy." One of the Packers should've been trying to engage a block to allow a wide receiver to recover the onside kick. Instead, he tried to be the hero, and the ball deflected to Seattle.
You figured Seattle was going to call PASS plays inside the 2 minute warning ... NOT run Marshawn Lynch to take the lead.
For overtime, the Packers supposedly had more say in possession, since they called the coin toss (allegedly a random or fair 50/50 event). Even though the NFL has changed the OT rules, I still don't see what's different when you can have a game with only one OT possession and the other team not getting to attempt a drive.
I mean, I didn't watch the controversial MNF game between the Packers and Seahawks a few years back, but it seems like Seattle has relied on fluke plays for a while.
In the Super Bowl, I kind of felt the same. The first quarter felt like it was the Patriots dictating the game. The scoreboard didn't agree, thanks to a red zone interception.
The only legitimate TD I remember from Seattle came in the second quarter. Marshawn Lynch was being stopped and spun himself into the end zone.
At the end of the half, New England's defense pretty much gave points away. If there was no facemask call, Seattle wasn't going to be inside the red zone with 6 seconds left. Then there was a bad matchup on a Seattle wide receiver that the Seahawks exploited, but why take that risk of being down 7-14 at the half? It may have been a 10-14 game instead.
Seattle controlled the third quarter and finally put together some drives, but even then they had an illegitimate touchdown. They exploited a referee in the middle of the field who "interfered" with Darrelle Revis. Let's assume they did get the 10 points that quarter no matter what. It was only a 24-14 lead because of the bizarre ending to the first half. The score could've also been 20-14 or 17-14.
In the 4th quarter, I thought the Patriots started to dictate the game again, and they kept driving a few yards at a time, based on what the defense was giving them. Meanwhile, Seattle was just waiting around, thinking they could get lucky again in the last two or three minutes.
Then, it almost DID happen that way! People talk about how they should've run the ball from the 1 or 2 yard line, but how did they get there in the first place? I didn't see the previous "catch" being anything similar to David Tyree. In that other game, Eli was about 90% sacked when he pulled away from the pass rushers. Then he threw up a dangerous ball to the middle of the field, and the wide receiver was first to make contact with the ball.
This other play from last night was Russell Wilson calmly throwing a long ball outside the numbers. It looked like great coverage from the DB, who tipped the ball away. Another DB came in late, but didn't focus on the ball. Instead, the receiver was on the ground, tipping the deflected ball to himself. How many times can a team benefit from these DUMB LUCK plays? The announcers were calling it an "incompletion" as they watched it live.
If you go back to the idea where the halftime score could've been 7-14 or 10-14 (best case scenario), the score was going to be 20-28 on that drive, with Seattle needing a TD and a two-point conversion just to tie.
In the last 20 seconds, I thought something crazy could still happen, because New England didn't have enough room to kneel down inside the field of play (only to score a safety). It actually looked like the center flinched or bobbed his head before a defender jumped. The penalty was called the other way, though.
Then, the fight that almost broke out was ridiculous, when Seattle considers themselves a "zen" laid-back team who practice meditation to lower stress and depression. To me, it was more like they never learned sportsmanship, and they're mad that playing a high risk game plan FINALLY backfired.
The Patriots still might be "cheaters," and that's what made the game a joke in the first place. I was just glad that the team that kept trying hard and fighting eventually got the win, instead of a team that kept relying on the two-minute warning and reckless play calls.
