The matchups were key in the final round (weeks 16 and 17, combined score, no PPR). Against my cousin Robert or my uncle (who played for third place), I would've lost. I had beaten my uncle pretty handily in week 14, with a small "loss" in week 15, to advance out of the semifinals by about a 60 point cushion.
If we awarded a real trophy, I'd give it to Odell Beckham, Jr. I'm not sure why nobody else tried to grab him off the waiver wire. Either that, or I had a higher waiver priority due to not being the top seed in the standings.
When you look at the early game logs for "OBJ," he was basically a touchdown-dependent "flex" player. He didn't play at all in September. His first three games had this TOTAL stat line: 10 catches, 106 yards, 3 TDs. Basically, awesome in the TD department, but barely 100 TOTAL yards and maybe 3 catches per game?
At some point, Victor Cruz got injured. OBJ started racking up 100-yard games, but he went three weeks without a TD grab. Then came the Dallas game, where he torched them for 10 catches and two scores (one of which I think was a Sportscenter Top 10 play for several weeks).
Strangely enough, he was just average against Jacksonville (a game the Giants somehow LOST after going ahead 24-0), and didn't reach the endzone.
Then you got to December, and he was firing on all cylinders: 43 catches, 606 yards, 7 TDs. He scored a TD in every game, and never dipped below 130 yards! That's almost a guaranteed 20 standard fantasy points. In fact, I think he was the only 20 point scorer on my team in week 17.
I'm not sure how my cousin Andrew's team kind of fell apart. Weeks 16 and 17 can be rough because that's when the league schedules the last few divisional games. Week 17 is usually 100% divisional games. Andrew had the other Andrew (Luck), who somehow got shut down by the Cowboys in week 16. Le'Veon Bell had close to the most total yards from scrimmage in the whole league this season (or did he finish #1?). In week 17, I was watching the game when he got taken out at the knee. At that point, I was already leading in the fantasy score, and Andrew had no other active players. I had A. J. Green playing with one healthy arm, and then Antonio Brown, who did some nice pushing off to get the score that put the (NFL) game out of reach. That's not really how I wanted to win, but they seem to let the players fight with their hands while the pass is in the air.
Overall, I'm not sure how to explain my winning strategy. Jamaal Charles was pretty much AWFUL after week 14. I'm thinking he got hurt or something. He's almost to the age where running backs start to decline. Eddie Lacy actually surpassed J. Charles in total fantasy points towards the end of the season. He (Lacy) had gotten off to a bad start (facing the Seahawks, Jets, and Lions), whereas Jamaal was almost immune to any matchup. I think he even did better against Seattle than he did in the first game at Oakland.
I had drafted Matt Ryan to be my starting QB, with Philip Rivers as a backup. Then the Chargers got off to that hot start, while Atlanta was something like 2-6. Rivers still had an edge about 3/4 through the season, so I was riding his "high ceiling," instead of Matt Ryan's consistency (14, 15, 15 ...). Somewhere around December, it flipped to where Ryan was the #1 scorer on my whole team, but I still sat him in one game where he didn't have Julio Jones. Logically, he surpassed 300 yards in that game. Then Rivers was supposed to play poorly against the slumping 49ers, but he ended up with 4 TDs (3 INTs) and a ton of yards in an overtime game, so he actually would've been the better play.
Defense was hard to figure out all season long, but I guess that affected the whole NFL? The Eagles were the #1 fantasy defense for a while, but mainly because they kept scoring a TD per game on special teams. I had drafted the Bengals and 49ers. I finished with the Patriots and the Lions (both of them had been dropped by Andrew; he countered by signing the 49ers off of waivers).
I guess it's true that putting in so many hours (comparing yards per pass allowed, if that defense usually faced the number of pass attempts that the offense was averaging, INT to TD ratio ...) can pay off, right? Now I'll probably spend the summer comparing ESPN's preseason draft rankings to how all of those players actually finished ... only to see 2015 shake up the rankings again.
