I'm not really happy, regardless of the results. In the coverage I've watched (at least six channels), I don't really see analysts feeling overly passionate about either party. There definitely wasn't a turnout like in 2008 or 2012. How can you talk about voter repression, then? People are choosing not to even go to the polls! What if it was like Olympic tennis? You didn't play in the Davis Cup (vote in a midterm year)? You can't show up at the next presidential election. Now THAT would be controversial.
I don't like dishonesty in general. Like, I won't even bother to follow the link, but I see in the ticker something about Michael Brown being shot at close range. The autopsies have never disputed that. They're showing that he got hit in his hand or lower arm, probably from trying to grab the police officer's gun. Think of how much difference it makes to leave out certain details, though. Suspect was shot at close range from grabbing gun, or just "Suspect was shot at close range."
What does that have to do with politics? I thought there were way too many items on the local ballot. One public question was about not allowing bail for certain criminal charges. How does that usually work? I have no idea. In my mind, it should be up to the judge to offer bail or decide that someone is a risk to cause trouble or flee if they were to get out on bail. Why does it feel like you need legal knowledge to vote responsibly?
Another public question was about redirecting more corporate taxes to environmental projects. Again, I have no idea if that would happen any other way than by collecting those taxes or involving the government.
Then, of course, they always want to issue bonds for something. How do you buy these bonds? Do they offer decent interest rates? I'm figuring that, if people vote "yes" by default (it's not their money), why not hold some debt that the government eventually has to repay? It's kind of like how I'd like to own stock in my bank, because they keep taking money from me every month just to have an account with them.
Regarding candidates, I actually think certain non-political issues are pretty important. Babies can't defend themselves. If it's easier for them to die, I don't see how the country has a "future." Who is going to be alive to witness that future?
I'm not aware of a law that says an LGBT person wouldn't be able to enter into a heterosexual marriage. To me, that means the laws about marriage already apply "equally" to everyone. Biologically, I don't see how two men or two women have children without involving a third party. Fewer children doesn't sound like a positive thing.
Other people don't have to agree with me about those subjects. It's just awkward to be talking about any kind of economy or jobs without knowing that there will be people to fill those hypothetical jobs.
I don't agree with the ridiculous caricatures that Republicans have no concern for women, minorities, prisoners, the mentally ill ... I'd guess that most of them don't believe that casting a vote is your act of charity, and then the government handles the rest. Even if you give another person some money or temporary help, it doesn't mean you've changed their life. A few charities don't accept government grants, because they want to talk about the Gospel. Nothing controversial there, right? (sarcasm) That gets into the endless debate about whether God exists.
I also don't believe that some of the issues that might be popular (raising the minimum wage) need to be implemented at the federal level. Try to name two locations with almost the exact same costs of living. New Jersey passed that kind of rule at the state level, and I still don't see lots of new jobs. The wages should eventually rise at all levels, but based on a strong economy. If you don't like minimum wage, there are so many training programs that teach other skills.
Pretty much, on Wednesday morning, we'll still have the same President. Going all the way back to 2007, I assumed he'd show the leadership style of a guy with a missing father and lots of feminine influences. It's only logical that he does lead that way, if you can call it being a leader ("I found out about such and such by watching the news."). It seems like the Republicans only changed their strategy in terms of blocking Tea Party candidates from winning nominations. I still don't see much difference between the two parties. Maybe they can get more bills to clear the Senate, though (no Hairy Reed to ignore them), and then the ball will be in the President's court.
