Locally, I know there was a referendum this week (probably since I was getting the fliers and I voted). They wanted some "educational" funding, but when you looked at the actual list of projects, I didn't see the educational value:
Close two schools
Convert a school into an office building
Add $700,000 of wish list items to the athletic complex
Spend $300,000 on a parking lot
I'm not a contractor or a construction worker, so I don't know what's a reasonable cost for something like a parking lot. It just doesn't sound like an emergency or a project that directly helps students get better grades.
The way the whole thing was worded, I didn't even see a question mark. How do you know what a "Yes" or "No" vote implies? It also took up the whole screen and was very long, dry reading material. How many people understood what it was saying?
On the federal level, remember the "IRS scandal"? Assuming that it really was an atheist organization who pressured them into harassing "conservatives" or the "Tea Party," that's pretty creepy. Why don't the atheists lose their tax-exempt status? Why would the government care about what they were requesting?
It seems silly to ever feel like a "theocracy" could take over the whole United States - with one exception (see the next paragraph). I don't know many Christians who would want to live in an America that operated as a theocracy. The Catholics are so well organized that most of them ignore the Pope. Yet, these people are clever enough to put together a large conspiracy? Protestant denominations such as Baptists don't want to be governed by any large group. They try to be self-governing.
On the other hand, if you had radical Muslims using violence, that could take hold in America, because too many people are passivists. I guess that's my invented word for passive and pacifist.
Why is the government trying to insert itself into the name of an NFL team? It might just be rumors, but I heard that radio stations can be fined every time they say the term Redskins. This is America, right? Not North Korea, China or Cuba??? Assuming that would work for sports, here's what I would suggest for politics. Every pundit who says something false in support of President Obama, or just mentions his name, pays a fine. Logically, that would "force his hand," or convince him to resign. Or, does it only work in the other direction?
I think we've already been over a bunch of the other issues, but they just don't make SENSE. Who wouldn't support an increase in the minimum wage? Do you mean over time, or as the economy is able to support it? Or, do you just mean paying people more because you need their votes? If they earned more, that would pull them out of poverty. How do you figure? Are you saying that prices of goods and services wouldn't increase to reflect higher wages? Are you saying the poverty line wouldn't adjust to reflect higher salaries?
One of the "great" things about America is that wages and your tax bracket are supposed to be able to go up OR down throughout your life and career. Who says that a couple working low wage jobs right now won't retire as millionaires? Who says that a business owner won't have to file for bankruptcy? Who says that person won't have another good idea and open a second, third, or fourth business? Just in my lifetime alone, I've seen businesses close down. The chain I worked for when I was 18 doesn't exist anymore. It's not like the Middle Ages or Europe, where you're born into a social "class" and stay there. What bothers me is that, in 10-15 more years of the current regulations and slow economy, we COULD go backwards to that kind of society.
The media are laughable. I think his name is Bob Shiffert? He was talking about the story where a crazy guy got all the way inside the White House. "I didn't want that to be true." Are you kidding me? I would bet you that if you changed the President's last name to Nixon, Reagan, Bush, etc, he'd take pleasure in reporting that kind of story.
Meanwhile, there's just this whole group of workers who pay about 33% federal, state and local taxes. They already have more college loan debt that any generation in history. Then they want to own a home, which will make them eligible to pay property taxes. Then they'd like to drive a car, which makes them eligible to pay gasoline tax. Then they'd like to have some bills and utilities, which will make them eligible to pay federal regulatory fees. Then they'll eventually die and owe estate taxes. Does anyone seriously think that philosophical debates about minimum wages, what women do to their bodies, or racism contribute anything to that group of people? I wish they had some kind of representation.
