No matter what issue you mention, Rick tweets these articles about "common sense." I don't see much common sense on either side.
Let's focus on "infrastructure." Can a pipeline be considered "infrastructure"? How long has Congress wanted to build that thing, and it keeps getting stalled? I don't buy the explanation that you want to perform a study to find out about the impacts. Canada either wants to send the oil to us, or they'll find other buyers. This thing is getting built, and how would there be less of an impact if the oil goes elsewhere to be processed? It should be the same, or worse, depending on how well other countries refine the oil.
There are other good arguments, too. As long as you're not sending the oil down a pipeline, it still has to get shipped around the country. Those delivery routes become LONGER without the pipeline, so what about THAT "impact"? Do you think there won't be any accidents putting oil on trains or tanker trucks? Are you saying they won't burn more of their own fuel transporting this stuff around? Why do the opponents make it sound like their solution of obstructing the pipeline poses zero risks?
Are coal power plants part of "infrastructure"? Then why would they be forced to shut down? Again, it's the environment. We can burn coal very well, thanks to buzzwords like "science" and "technology." Please don't tell me the President isn't ideologically driven about wanting to get rid of coal. We probably CAN close those plants eventually, but ONLY AFTER OTHER ONES GO ONLINE. All of the alternate energy sources are controversial. Natural gas? Can't harvest that without polluting the water. Wind? Do you want a 200 foot tower casting shadows on your land all day and making noise 24/7? Nuclear? Meanwhile, what do you think it does to a local "economy" when most of those folks depend on the coal industry for jobs?!!!
Why would any "logical" person oppose a minimum wage? My uncle posted or shared a graphic recently. It was a map of the USA along with the value of "$100" in each state. For Missouri and that area, I believe your "$100" was actually worth $110 or more. In New York, it was worth about $86. Every state is different! You can't just raise a wage to the same number for every location and have that mean the same thing to local workers. I'm sure there probably are McDonald's that pay their workers $15/hour if the standard of living in that area is very high.
Has anyone ever earned $15/hour? I'm still trying to reach that mark myself. After taxes, it's really about $10/hour.
Have you eaten at a fast food restaurant lately? Do those workers give $15/hour effort or service? There's one KFC in town where the service is so bad that I won't be going back. There's probably a reason the drive-thru line is so short. Sonic might be the only place where I feel like those workers perform enough tasks to maybe qualify for $12/hour. You can always tip them, I believe (I just found that out recently, but it had to be in cash).
But people can't live on less than $15/hour. Um, who says that students in high school and college need to be fully supporting themselves? That's who I'd picture as the kind of worker who applies for those entry-level jobs. Can't you move up into management or find a different job? Those issues are all complex, and I don't feel like changing a wage addresses them.
Who isn't satisfied with their healthcare? I have some recent experience with this. I had been VOLUNTEERING. No drugs or anything were in my system. I missed a step in an older building and landed hard on my ankle. There were cracking or snapping sounds. I made it all the way down a flight of stairs before fainting.
I don't blame the people I was with for calling an ambulance. Here's the thing. Now that I have the bill, I realize it costs OVER NINE HUNDRED DOLLARS just to enter that ambulance. The mileage charge was pocket change. How does an unemployed person pay for that?
So, I've gone through the Medicaid application process. Tomorrow will mark seven weeks since I started the application, and it's still "being processed" according to who I spoke to this morning. If it ever becomes active, the effective date was AFTER I hurt myself, so there's no guarantee any of those bills will be covered. They were also in a different state, so I'm not sure how that works. I could be out $900, but at least I'll have coverage, right? This program may not have existed without the new laws, but in an "ideal" world, I'm not sure how I'd hurt myself in the first place, or I'd be smart and set savings aside for the unpredictable parts of life, or I would've found a new job already.
In general, I just wish people wouldn't use politics to cover up for other things. Why is there this fear about "ruining the environment"? Could it be cleaner? Yes. How do we even KNOW that something is a "fossil fuel"? I've brought it up several times how oil and natural gas are out there on other planets and moons. When did "fossils" live in those places?!! I've yet to hear a scientific response.
Do you care about wages, or just about bossing "big corporations" around? I'm not a huge fan of how fast food is made. Your beef probably came from a "feed lot," where cows were penned up on purpose to fatten them, while also walking around in manure. They know all this, so they treat the meat with ammonia and other chemicals to cover their behinds. What does it say about us if we consume that product, somehow thinking it's real "food"?
How is it better for the government to be spying on you than for a company to have access to all of your e-mail and browsing history? The point is, I DON'T TRUST EITHER ONE. Knowing that, how do you figure out how to vote? It sounds like a lose-lose scenario.
