Today, it was about "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" in their newest "reboot." I have to say that it wasn't as bad as some of the reviews (IGN said 6.0 on a 10 point scale), but I wouldn't say it could take the place of the first live-action film.
I'm not really one to follow celebrities, gossip, or rumors about movies and certain directors. So, I came in not knowing what the deal was with Megan Fox. They almost made her look like an airhead in the previews, but the previews these days seem to be deliberately lying to you.
The first part of the movie was pretty much being carried by April's character, and I didn't seem to mind. April almost ends up outshining the TMNT in the overall movie, if that makes sense.
There's kind of a message of "faith" and "spirituality" about this movie, unless I was reading beyond the lines. April is pretty much the only person to think that a certain story is important, or to "believe" in a vigilante who attacks the Foot Clan without being seen or leaving evidence behind. To me, that's almost what it means to be human, or a "Christian." "Oh, yeah. Keep talking about that invisible zombie in the sky."
It's hard to know what else to reveal without getting into "spoilers." There were some things I didn't like. The "Foot Clan" dress in camouflage and carry automatic weapons. I could kind of see the weapons fitting in with part of the plot about trying to intimidate civilians. When you see how they hold up against the Turtles, they don't make as much sense. Splinter is hideous. I know he's supposed to be a rat, but I didn't really get "rat" from his appearance. The head and eyes were telling me "mouse" or "hamster." April's coworker says things that could probably be grounds for a sexual harassment lawsuit. I'm not sure why he kept that up as if she was making advances at him.
They changed the origin story in a way that I can't remember hearing/reading in any other movie/comic book/cartoon. It's hard to reveal too much about that without thinking I might leak a "spoiler." For one thing, it's not as complicated as in the first issue of the comic book. Maybe they did that for the kids?
Shredder didn't really impress me. Going back to the previews, he almost looked two or three stories tall in a few of those shots. Then you see the fight scenes, and he might be the same height as the Turtles, but not as muscular. Another human calls him a "robot," but there had been a man who's always hidden by dark lighting in other scenes. His face is almost totally covered by the suit, which I didn't really like. His fighting style kind of gets ridiculous, too, since the traditional two blades he had on each hand are now detachable throwing knives. He keeps referring to April (obviously a grown woman) as a "girl."
The Turtles are kind of a mixed bag. I didn't like the choice of voice actor for Leonardo, but he was pretty much like the Leonardo from other movies. Mikey is hilarious and worth the price of a movie ticket almost by himself. He gets easily distracted by this ironic YouTube video that I don't want to spoil. Raph becomes almost too vulnerable in a climactic scene. Donatello annoyed me the most. I know he's usually stereotyped as a "geek," but it's like they went too far. He also picked up characteristics like Tony Stark/Iron Man's habit of rambling when people aren't really listening, and he seems to have an anxiety disorder.
Overall, I just keep coming back to April. She's not really shown as having many social contacts. There's the creepy coworker I mentioned. Her roommate is shown a few times. Saying much more could be a spoiler. She has this sense where she knows what she's talking about, even if nobody else takes her seriously. It may not be everyone's life experience, but I GET THAT. How many people over age 30 are still fans of these TMNT characters? How are you supposed to talk about Jesus without people thinking you "ram religion" at them? I'm not even sure what the breakdown might be of folks who could be interested, but had a bad experience vs people who are outwardly hostile vs people who don't seem to care either way about death and what happens next.
Between now and death, there are some pretty decent movies, though. This was the first time in the whole summer where I didn't come away disappointed. "Captain America" was good in the first installment. The sequel had a bunch of violence, sometimes inflicted by "Cap" himself. X-Men keeps wanting to change their characters, so I can barely follow that series anymore. Up next is probably "The Giver." That one might be intentionally "religious," since it's dealing with heavy philosophical topics (people not living to the fullest, because it's more important to feel "safe" and have everything decided for you).
