Almost any country can score. I'm sure their fans appreciate that, but it's kind of like I mentioned above: can you even distinguish one team from all the rest?
Tomorrow, I think groups A and B finish their games before the start of the playoff round. Group A looks a lot more interesting:
Brazil 4 pts
Mexico 4 pts
Croatia 3 pts
Cameroon 0 pts
Since Brazil are in their own country, and Cameroon hasn't scored yet, I would tend to favor Brazil in that match. There doesn't seem to be a way for Brazil to guarantee they'll win the group, though. If Mexico also wins, it means those countries could stay tied on points. They played to a draw in their head-to-head match. That wouldn't break the tie. Brazil currently has a higher goal differential, and a win would mean their differential would increase to at least +3 (since you need a minimum of one more goal than another team to win). Mexico are at +1 in the goal differential, so they'd need to win by multiple goals (or root for a Brazil loss/tie).
Assuming that Brazil should be able to win, Mexico vs Croatia would have lots more at stake. Neither team can afford to lose. There's even a way for Croatia to win the whole group if Brazil loses or finishes with a draw.
I'm not sure what to think of Mexico in this tournament. If you watched their qualifying matches just to reach the World Cup, they were AWFUL and didn't score many goals. Then they only had to beat New Zealand in a two part playoff, which I think they did pretty handily. Against Brazil, they mainly tied because their keeper ("goalie") was using every part of his body to record the "clean sheet" (shutout). They're one of only two teams not to surrender a goal yet, but scoring is still a problem (just one goal in two matches - although I heard that some of their goals from match #1 were disallowed because of bad judgment by the referees).
Group B has almost no suspense left:
Netherlands 6 pts
Chile 6 pts
Australia 0 pts
Spain 0 pts
Australia and Spain are just playing for pride. The Netherlands have shown they can score goals, but they were trailing during portions of both games they've already played. Chile are pretty impressive. I'm not sure if they've trailed yet, and they're apparently one of the other teams (I thought it was only France) who have won each game by multiple goals and without coming from behind.
I'm still trying to figure out all the scenarios in the USA's group. I have until Wednesday or Thursday to post about that. From what I can tell, you won't see BOTH the USA and Germany not advancing. I think Portugal would root for Germany to beat us, and Ghana might want us to beat Germany.
