There are a few of the X-Men movies I need to catch up on (such as the newest release). I'm not really a comic book person, but I can remember seeing these characters on Saturday morning cartoons, and playing a few of the video games. There's some kind of "evolutionary" explanation for why they're different, and how they got their special "powers." In real life, I'm only aware of mutations causing "disabilities," or causing someone to be diagnosed as "mentally ill," etc.
Assuming the evolutionary part is true, and taking an idea like "survival of the fittest," how do you figure out who's actually "right" or "wrong" in the X-Men universe? I may be distorting what it means to say "survival of the fittest," but doesn't that usually mean "weak" members of a species died off? Of course, I'm not sure how you figure out what makes one creature "weak" (maybe just the fact that it died?), while another one had a more desirable set of DNA. Sometimes, it just sounds like the environment changed (from fresh water to salt water, different temperatures ...), and animals who couldn't live in the new conditions probably died (or their food sources died, which doesn't really sound like their own fault).
In the X-Men story, there seem to be two different views, which are more specifically represented by two people. Professor Charles Xavier doesn't seem to think there's a conflict between mutants and "regular" humans, or that there isn't a need for them to be in conflict. Magneto thinks there is going to be a conflict, and the mutants deserve to win. How does that make him "evil"? Wouldn't modern politicians claim that "Professor X" (Xavier) is getting in the way of progress and science by not letting mutants dominate or take over the whole world until regular humans (the "weaker" members of society) go extinct? Of course, Magneto doesn't seem to let "science" and natural processes do all the work. In the first movie, I even remember a line where he said, "God works too slow."
Once you start to process these things "logically," they seem to fall apart. Politics and economics are weird, too. Why do candidates who claim to believe in evolution (and apparently, "survival of the fittest") want to make it easier for less skilled workers to fill up a large percentage of job openings? I struggle with those ideas myself. There are friends I know who would probably be labeled "low skill" workers, or they're part of government unions, but their jobs are still needed and important. Why should someone else feel superior to them?
Are companies that grow large not allowed to keep acquiring other companies? It bugs me, and creates a market where prices stay high (due to lack of competition), but how can you argue that there's anything "wrong" with a big business growing bigger? They might be doing it more often if not for certain regulations or government intervention. It's equally foolish when the government wants to become the source of just about everything, or tries to put big companies out of business.
Lots of things just don't make sense. In the X-Men world, I'm not sure what would eventually happen if there weren't conflicts between humans and mutants. Would both societies just keep marrying their own and stay separate? Would mutants having children with other mutants keep making their kind "stronger"? Would intermarriage with humans and mutants dilute the two DNA lines, holding back "science"/"evolution"/"progress"? Progress all by itself is kind of a neutral word. I believe it means "to walk toward (something)." You'd have to define the something, and explain whether that was really a desirable goal. There has never been much agreement on what should be a desirable goal. That takes a system of morality, and people think they get to define their own morality, which only applies to themselves (until it's "forced" on several others).
