What I do know is that there's a Dr. Hugh Ross who was on a TV program recently. I guess he's an "Old Earth creationist." You might hear debates over how the Earth is less than 10,000 years old, about 6,000 years old, or billions of years old. Here's the weird thing - scientists don't know how to explain TIME ITSELF ... yet you're supposed to argue over a number of years?!!
From the biblical perspective, there's a story of creation that only lists seven "days." While I could see some of the "days" being different from the 24 hours we refer to as a "day," there are many weird parts of the story. Earth is the oldest thing in the universe. Stars aren't mentioned until three days later. Birds were supposed to evolve from dinosaurs, but fish and birds are the oldest animals in that story. Land animals (which would probably include lizards) came the next "day." I've heard that lizards never stop growing, so in an ideal environment, couldn't you picture them becoming the size of a house? The average dinosaur was only the size of a sheep, and it's mainly two types that are shown trying to eat humans (T-rex, velociraptor) in a popular movie.
The final weird thing, at least for humans, is how an eyewitness was there on the sixth "day." The Bible calls him Adam. Of course, he's not alive now to ask him about the details of that day. Was he born at night, or towards the end? There's a seventh "day" where nothing new was being created, so how long did Adam observe that day to be? If all of the days from that part of Genesis are millions or billions of years, then for Adam, who lived to an amazing age (at least 900 if I recall), does that mean he died during the seventh "day"? Is all of our portion of history still in the seventh day?
Starting from Adam, it's hard to count more than a few thousand years of historical records. There's an article I was reading where scholars tried to suggest that someone "begetting" children doesn't have to mean sons and daughters. They only showed two possible examples, but even those were maybe a gap of three or four generations and probably talking about your figurative great-grandchildren. You can't really insert 100,000 or a million years anywhere.
So, I say all of that to demonstrate how the people who talk about a "young Earth" didn't just make up the 6,000 years to be out of touch with science and reality. On the side of billions of years, my understanding is they used radioactive rocks from a meteorite. If that thing was never part of Earth, how does it relate to the age of the planet? If the oldest tree anyone can find is less than 10,000 years old, what did Earth look like 100,000 years ago? No trees? Or, somehow, all of the ones from that time period died together?
Yesterday, I was poking around on this site about "Reasons to Believe." An article on philosophy kind of illustrates points I've mentioned before:
http://www.reasons.org/articles/reclaiming-reason-from-atheism
Assuming atheism is TRUE, how can you trust a brain that evolved over time? What does "hope" mean? If you feel that life doesn't matter, because you're going to be annihilated, and the universe will burn up, why do we treat those people for "depression" or give them mind-altering drugs?
The articles about biology and evolution can be hard to follow:
http://www.reasons.org/articles/paleoanthropologists-fail-to-find-common-ancestor-to-modern-humans-and-neanderthals
Now, wait a minute. I thought there already was evidence that neanderthals and humans are close cousins???? Why do they look for evidence after the fact? When teeth contradict their idea, is it possible that neanderthals DIDN'T evolve into humans? That's what confuses me about most of these studies and experiments. It's true you might have to take a guess or form a "hypothesis" before you start, but what if it's proven wrong? Why doesn't the hypothesis have to change? Instead, it sounds like they're just going to find a different way to make a connection between those two species. If teeth weren't a reliable way to find out, why do a study comparing the teeth in the first place? It's really confusing.
I know that "reason" doesn't lead directly to faith. It's also my opinion that people aren't rejecting God because of reason. I mean, so what if "religious" people are hypocrites? You've never been a hypocrite? Why do politicians who talk about the importance of education and how it opens up doors of opportunity take actions to shut down charter schools? That would be a HUGE disruption for students and their parents. You're also not supposed to worship a regular human. If people did understand all of the "rules," that's not faith, either. From what I've heard, rules are supposed to reveal that you're not perfect. You'd never have to worry about the consequence for (insert shameful behavior) if people aren't going to act out (shameful behavior). Most of the time, I think people are also unforgiving towards other humans, regardless of when an offense occurred (15, 20, 30 ... years ago). I feel like I see that way too often.
In terms of faith or "religion" itself, I'm also not sure how Catholicism gets lumped together with Christianity. A church isn't actually a building, but why would you name a building after "The Blessed Virgin," or "Saints Peter and Stephen"? I've watched live presentations of the Christmas mass out of curiosity and don't always know what they're celebrating. I don't mean to insult any Catholics. To me, it's kind of like, no wonder they would see this as "boring" or a bunch of rituals.
Just a collection of thoughts I wanted to share.
